Delaware Pride and the Metropolitan Community Church of Rehoboth, features
bingo games galore, each culminating in a fabulous prize!
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first game will
be called at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance ($15 at the door) and can be
purchased at Pelican Loft and CAMP Rehoboth on Baltimore Avenue, and The
Beacon Thrift Store in the Midway Shopping Center.
I Do! I Do! to light up Rehoboth Art
League
Not only will there be a musical wedding at the Chambers Studio on the
Rehoboth Art League grounds this Feb-ruary, but audiences will be able to
enjoy a loving look at an entire 50-year marriage.
The Art League, in conjunction with Fay J.
Productions will present the legendary Broadway musical I Do! I Do! starring
Eloise Ullman and Eric C. Peterson.
The show will be presented for four
performances only on Feb.14, 15 and 16. Tickets are $12 ($10 for Art League
members). Tickets are on sale now by calling the Art League at 227-8408. It
is suggested that reservations be made early, since last year’s winter
production sold out completely.
This production of I Do! I Do! will be staged
to suit the uniquely intimate setting of the Chambers Studio. Not quite a
fully-staged production, but more complex than a concert version, the show
will blend the two styles to produce a fast-paced, prop-filled, hilarious
performance, featuring two of the best musical comedy voices in the region.
Under the direction of Fay Jacobs, I Do! I
Do! will feature a familiar musical score by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt
(who also wrote The Fantas-tiks), including the tune “My Cup Runneth
Over.”
The show follows the marriage of a young
couple at the first part of the 20th century through their golden years
together. It is by turns romantic, humorous and very universal when it comes
to human relationships.
Director Jacobs has more than 25 years of
professional theatrical experience in the Washington, D.C. area, plus
Rehoboth productions of Love Letters , Shirley Valentine, 2001’s Stage
Door Canteen and last season’s Adam & Eve. Veteran performer Eloise
Ullman has had lead roles in most of the classic Broadway musicals. In the
Washington D.C. area, she teamed with director Jacobs as Marian the
Librarian in Music Man and Maria in The Sound of Music. Eloise recently
appeared in the wildly comical Nunsense.
Peterson, a professional actor and playwright
appeared in the 2000 Art League production of Love Letters, in 2001’s
Stage Door Canteen, and as Adam in last season’s Adam & Eve. His
resume includes everything from Neil Simon comedy to Shakespeare. In 2002,
his adaptation of The House of Seven Gables had a New York reading.
Turning the Chambers Studio into a theatre
will be the task of scenic designer Don Gardiner; Technical Direction will
be by Bonnie Quesenberry.
Tickets are $12 and can be reserved by
calling 227-8408. The Art League is located on Dodds Lane in Henlopen Acres.
Beach House Rush and Reunion Feb. 23 In DC
Shake the sand out of those shorts and get the dust off those flip flops,
it’s time once again to put yourself in that beach state of mind! The
weather outside may be less than hospitable this time of year in Washington,
but that won’t stop several hundred partygoers from celebrating a seasonal
rite of passage by attending this year’s annual “Beach House Rush &
Reunion Party,” Sunday, February 23, from 5-8 p.m. at Lizard Lounge, 1223
Connecticut Ave., NW, Washington, DC.
Always entertaining, this year’s event is
planned to help participants shed those big city winter blues and get ready
for another exciting summer in Rehoboth Beach, “America’s Gay Summer
Capitol.”
“We are looking forward to hosting this
year’s Rush Party event, and we anticipate a great crowd as always,”
says the Love Benefit Committee’s Bill Alldredge, one of the major
sponsoring organizations. “Mark Lee at Lizard has once again donated use
of a great space for the event at their new venue near Dupont Circle. It
should be a wonderful evening.”
What started years ago as a way for the many
Washington area beach goers heading to Rehoboth for the Summer season to
meet, greet, and collectively make shared beach house living arrangements,
has evolved into an annual gay beach community reunion of sorts.
“This is the perfect way to meet people who
you’ll spend a great summer at the shore with, or catch up with friends
from here or Philly or Baltimore that you may only see at the beach,”
Alldredge said, keeping with the reunion theme for this year. “Some of the
best friends I have ever made have been because of the Rehoboth
experience.”
The event usually draws a crowd of several
hundred participants eager to make beach plans and catch up with old
friends, and the beach theme door prizes seem to be a hit with attendees as
well.
There are some great new sponsors supporting
the event this year who will add a new twist to the all important prize
give-a-ways. New major sponsors, including US Airways and Centaur Music,
along with many familiar Rehoboth area merchants, are making donations for
prizes, in appreciation for the loyal beach following in the area.
While the Beach House Rush tries to fulfill
its overall mission with a party atmosphere, the event actually performs a
very important community service. The practical premise is very simple.
People who own or rent beach houses in the Rehoboth area are able to
meet and interview prospective tenants or summer roommates to help fill
their houses for the summer beach and party season. That season typically
runs from mid May through mid September, so beach house plans are typically
made by February or March of each year, perfect timing for such an event.
Not interested in your own summer place at
the beach? The party is a great place to make friends that just might invite
you down for a well-deserved weekend vacation at the shore.
The event is coordinated and produced by CAMP
Rehoboth, and the Love Benefit Committee, which also produces the annual
Love Weekend charity dance events Independence Holiday weekend in Rehoboth
Beach. This is the Love Committee’s first year as a major sponsor.
Proceeds from the event—a five dollar
requested door donation—are contributed to the Love Benefit Committee’s
Events Fund.

Women Invited to Learn about Breast Cancer
at Home Parties
Taking Care of Ourselves, a program of the Delaware Breast Cancer
Coalition, Inc. (DBCC) for lesbians and women who partner with women
introduces a new, innovative approach to teach women about the importance of
early detection of breast cancer: Breast Health House Parties!
With games such as: Truths and Myths, Breast
Health Bingo, Breast Health Jeopardy, Acting Up!, and Bouncing Around Ideas,
women learn important information about breast health, early detection
methods, and ways to overcome barriers to accessing health care, such as
fears about coming out to a health care professional.
A trained facilitator will come to a
woman’s home, youth group, or other women’s group in Delaware to teach
friends friends and family about the three essential components of
early detection: breast self-exam, clinical
breast exam, and mammography.
The facilitator teaches women this important,
potentially life saving information in a relaxed social setting among
friends and family who can support each other with their health questions
and concerns.
The house parties include games, activities,
discussion, a video, and breast self-exam instruction using practice breast
models. For more information, or to host a party, please call Sandra Hoy at
302-778-1102, or e-mail at shoy@debreastcancer.org.
This
project is supported by a grant from the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan
G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Mautner Project for Lesbians with
Cancer assisted in the development of the house party activities. DBCC was
established in 1991 by a small group of community volunteers to raise
awareness of breast cancer by providing information, education and support
in a caring and responsive manner on the early detection and treatment of
breast cancer. DBCC is an affiliate member of the National Breast Cancer
Coalition and supports the national organization’s efforts to research the
causes of breast cancer and pursue optimal treatments and cures. DBCC is
located at 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 1115 in Wilmington, DE 19801, with a
Resource Center located in Dover, DE. For additional information about the
organization, please call 302-778-1102 or visit our website at www.debreastcancer.org.
