I have to confess that I actually enjoy the Rehoboth winter season—though
a little more snow would have been nice—but a recent warm, sunshiny day
has even me longing for springtime. Here at CAMP Rehoboth plans are
underway for all the activities and events that warmer weather will bring
to our community in the months ahead—including the groundbreaking for
the new CAMP Rehoboth Community Center building. This is going to be an
especially exciting year for us, and the building process will, I’m
sure, involve some unique volunteer skills and needs. To volunteer, call
Kathy Weir at CAMP Rehoboth.
Volunteers will also be needed, of course, for our first big event of
the new year, The Seventh Annual CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Weekend, April
13-15. The Weekend includes: concerts by pop, jazz, and blues vocalist
Suede and the acclaimed comedienne Karen Williams; a golf outing; brunch
on Sunday with entertainer Viki Dee at Cloud 9; and of course, the
foundation of the Weekend, The CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Conference at the
Convention Center. This year’s Conference—A Woman’s Journey—will
feature keynote speaker Paula Ettelbrick, Executive Director of the
International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and Delaware
Governor Ruth Ann Minner. The 19 conference workshops cover a wide range
of subjects including: estate planning, digital photography, dealing with
difficult people, surviving loss, starting a business, yoga, humor and
healing, country line dancing and much more. Brochures about the event
have been mailed. For more information about the Women’s Weekend and it’s
accompanying events—including a complete listing of workshops and a
registration form, see page 26.
Want to get more involved in gay rights issues? Make plans to join CAMP
Rehoboth and the ACLU of Delaware LGBT Civil Rights Project for a Town
Hall Meeting at Epworth United Methodist Church (20 Baltimore Avenue) in
Rehoboth Beach at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 11. The meeting will provide an
opportunity for us all to share ideas about the current legislative
session and future gay rights plans in the state of Delaware including:
civil rights legislation, relationship recognition, partner benefits,
transgender issues, parenting, and more. Students, retirees, and everyone
in between—gay and straight—are welcome. Light refreshments will be
served.
Though July may seem far away, the CAMP Rehoboth Follies will be here
before we can say "Fruit Cocktail"—which is, by the way, the
2007 Follies Theme—and it’s never too early to get started working on
a skit. With Christopher Peterson returning as host of the event and an
expanded committee working to make it an unforgettable night we have hopes
that it will be the best Follies ever. Organizations, businesses, beach
houses, families, or friends are invited to create a musical skit, no
longer than 8 minutes, and compete for the Golden Barbie Award. To sign
up, call us and we’ll email the guidelines and registration forms.
Fay Jacobs has been a columnist for letters from CAMP Rehoboth for many
years, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of CAMP Rehoboth. As
the Executive Director of Rehoboth Beach Main Street she is an important
part of the Rehoboth Beach community—both gay and straight. She is also
a very funny lady, whose sense of humor and willingness to share the
adventures of her life—both great and small—makes us all laugh just
when we need it the most. In 2004, A&M Books published a collection of
her Letters’ columns in her first book, As I Lay Frying—A Rehoboth
Beach Memoir. Later this month, the sequel, Fried & True—Tales from
Rehoboth Beach, will roll off the presses. Congratulations to Fay from all
of us at CAMP Rehoboth. Make plans now to join us at the Community Center
for a book signing party on April 22.
