CAMP Matters

by Murray Archibald

Reading Between the Lines

For the last few years, Kathy Weir, the CAMP Rehoboth Administrative Coordinator, has kept an informal listing of the various activities in which CAMP Rehoboth plays a part. In the past we have included this list with financial statements and other listings accompanying our annual report, and though we may very well may do that again this year, we thought it important to let it stand on its own for once.

At the same time I would also like to take the opportunity to say thank you to Kathy for the extraordinary service that she provides for CAMP Rehoboth. Kathy has been with us full time since November 1, 1999 (and was a hard working volunteer before that), and I’m not sure what we would do without her. Though I love our new space and the opportunities it provides to both the staff and the community, I’m sure I speak for Steve and Sal when I say that we all miss being within speaking distance of her desk. She is the one we turn to when we need information that no one else would possibly know. She is the face that most often greets a stranger arriving at the Community Center for the first time. She is the heart who remembers to think of those most in need in our community. Her laugh, when it floats up the stairs or through the window from the courtyard outside, makes us all feel better.

There are countless others, of course, who joined her to make all the things on this list possible. Sundance alone, required the efforts of 167 volunteers! The success of the Founders’ Circle is due to the amazing contributions of 749 individuals. Even things that sound simple on the list, like selling tickets, require an enormous amount of time and energy. Woven all between the lines of Kathy’s List are the hearts, hands, and creative minds of individuals who have taken responsibility for one activity, or one project, or even one single task. Every event has its own team of people working in the background to make it happen.

Some of the activities on the list are strictly CAMP Rehoboth events, others are in partnership or sponsorship with other organizations. In some situations we lead; in others we follow. At the heart of it all is a belief that as a community we can do more than any single one of us alone.

Even as I write these words, plans are underway for the events and activities that will become Kathy’s List for 2006. In the works (and at various levels of completion) are plans for new logo and web design; guidelines for the usage of the Community Center space (including the work of our new Art Review and Selection Committee); completion of plans and drawings for the next phase of the Community Center construction; The Heart of the Community Art Project; The Founders’ Circle Black and White Beach Ball; and the CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Weekend that includes the Women’s Conference, Concerts, Golf, and Parties—and that doesn’t even take us into the summer season!
