To The Editor:
There was a time in this country when the marriages of slaves had little or no legal
significance and slave owners separated families at will. What weddings occurred were
often trivialized to the point where jumping a broomstick replaced the exchange of vows
and rings. Then as late as 1967 in some states, interracial marriages continued to be
illegal.
While these abuses by a nation guaranteeing the pursuit of happiness have
been corrected, incredibly it remains ille- gal for up to 10% of our population to marry
the person of their choice. We refer to those American citizens who hap- pen to be gay.
Of course our discussion here is limited to civil marriage: we do not presume to tell
the various faith groups (except our own) what they should do. But our federal and state
governments should not be in the business of legislating either religion or prejudice and
it is time they stopped. Gay people are Americans, too!.
As a nation, we hove done same bad things to women and minorities, yet our history is
one of correcting abuses and increasing liberties. Civil gay marriage will happen. Our
history suggests it; democracy assures it; enlightened people work for it.

To David Bianco, PASTOUT Columnist
Dear Mr. Bianco,
I very much enjoyed your article on the late 70s civil rights setbacks. I
was amazed to discover that Reagan supported the gay rights measure in California. I am
currently researching the Reagan administration and its policies on gay rights for a
production of Angels in America this fall, and would be most thankful if you could offer
any assistance. From what Ive found so far, it seems Reagan had many gay friends and
contacts, but separated himself from the issue politically. Any insight you could offer on
this topic (or any of the many other topics in the play) would be very much appreciated.
Thank you for your time, and the excellent article.
Sincerely,
Robert Daniel
