News from the Rehoboth Beach Film Society
A Night Under the Stars!
Can you imagine watching an entertaining film outdoors with a cool
evening breeze, the sound of gentle surf in the background, and the
twinkling of stars above? Well, now you can live that experience this
summer as the Rehoboth Beach Film Society and the City of Rehoboth Beach
bring you Cinema by the Surf at the new bandstand on Rehoboth Ave.
As the sun sets, film enthusiasts can take a seat (first come-first
serve) at the bandstand and allow yourself to be swept away by the evening’s
entertainment. To make this film experience the ultimate, indulge yourself
with a delicious treat ranging from sushi to French fries to your favorite
ice-cream. Any and all of these delights, and so much more, are obtainable
from the many food vendors within a few steps from the outdoor venue. To
make your indulgence even more enjoyable, you don’t have to worry about
crunching too loudly or noisily unwrapping paper. The venue has no walls
so sound just flies away.
This summer’s schedule includes the following:
Thursday, July 12 (time: sunset)
For Life
For Life reveals the unseen realities of being a member of the
prestigious group of individuals known as the Rehoboth Beach Patrol. Told
firsthand by Rehoboth Beach Patrol Lifeguards, past and present, For Life
presents an eye opening portrayal of the daily rigors of being responsible
for thousands of lives. Filmmakers and former lifeguards Nicholas Crawford
and Scottie James capture the essence of 85 years protecting Rehoboth’s
heavily populated beaches. Whether it’s winning National Championships,
long days sitting on the stand, or pulling a life from the ocean’s
grasp, the job has become a tradition that cannot be broken: the Rehoboth
Beach Patrol. For Life premiered at the Ninth Annual Rehoboth Beach
Independent Film Festival and earned second place in the Audience Award
category for Best Documentary. [2006, runtime: 90 min., Not rated]
Thursday, August 23 (time: sunset)
Charlotte’s Web
If you read this story in your youth, this is a must-see film. Wilbur,
the runt of a pig litter, is scared because he knows that soon he will end
up on the dinner table. A friendship develops with Charlotte, a spider who
lives in his pen. Charlotte, while entering the last stage of her life,
hatches a creative plan to save Wilbur’s life. Yes, a part of this film
may bring tears, but to see one of your favorite childhood stories on the
big screen is a wonderful experience. [2006, runtime: 97 minutes]
Whether with friends, family, or by yourself, Cinema By the Surf is a
unique film experience that is sure to become one of your summer rituals.
Suggestion: You might want to bring a comfortable cushion, because yes,
those wooden bleachers can be hard.
