The Way I See It
|
| by Steve Elkins, Editor |
The glorious feeling created by last week’s stunning June weather was
dampened a bit by the news out of Dover. First, the Delaware
non-discrimination bill (originally HB 92—then HB 99, HB 36, SB 9—and
finally SB 11) was again not allowed out of committee. Just as bad,
however, was the confusing news that Delaware State Senator George Bunting
(whose district includes Rehoboth Beach), had joined Senators Still,
Venables, Bonini, and Representatives Ewing, Hocker, Lee, and Thornburg as
a sponsor of the new SB 156—a proposed amendment to the state
constitution which would prohibit recognition of same sex marriages, civil
unions, domestic partnerships, and other similar same gender legal
relationships conducted in Delaware or anywhere else. The news was
confusing, because Bunting is also one of the sponsors of a bill that
would provide domestic partner benefits to state employees. When I spoke
to him about the matter, however, he insisted that his name should not
have been added to SB 156 and that he had asked that it be removed.
After that agitation, take a deep breath and think "lovely"
thoughts because Love Weekend 2007 has arrived. In fact, about the time
this issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth hits the streets, the Love
Welcome Party will be underway at CAMP Rehoboth—a perfect time to pick
up tickets for the big Love Remixed: One Night Only party at the Rehoboth
Convention Center the following night (June 30, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.). From what
I hear, DJ David Knapp and light man Paul Turner have a fabulous evening
planned.
Last week, Murray’s 18 year nephew Drew was visiting from Alabama,
and agreed to help me a little with the CAMP Rehoboth Golf Classic at the
Marsh Island Golf Club. After it was over he proudly proclaimed that he
had been dubbed, "an honorary lesbian," which, of course,
inspired Kathy Weir to dig out one of the CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Weekend
t-shirts for him to take home with him—but that’s another story. The
Golf tournament was a huge success. The tournament and the CAMP Rehoboth
Women’s Golf League from which it was born are both successful because
of the hard work and dedication of Barb Thompson and Evie Simmons. From
the continental breakfast and lunch at the golf club, to the many great
prizes (including the hole-in-one possibility of winning $10,000), the two
of them made sure that everyone had a fantastic time. An event like this
one is only a success if it has a "driving force" behind it—in
this case, Barb and Evie are, indeed, that force—and there’s nothing
honorary about them, they’re real lesbians. Fore…
Thanks are also in order to the staff of the Blue Moon for all the hard
work and energy they put into this years’ Bachelor Auction for Love
2007. Thanks to managers Tim Ragan and Meghan Gardner, the personable Miss
Richfield and her assistant Mona Lotts, and of course, the many bachelors,
the auction raised over $20,000 for Love Weekend 2007. Love, of course,
benefits CAMP Rehoboth and the Sussex County AIDS Council. Quite a few of
the bachelors (including a handsome father and son team) are pictured in
CAMPshots 1 and 2.
Can’t remember the names of new friends? Forgotten the address of a
party? The 2007 Beach Book—CAMP Rehoboth’s summer telephone directory—is
now available at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center—and it’s free.
With listings by street address and individual names, it’s a great way
to keep up with all the Rehoboth summer beach houses. Also (speaking of
beach houses) there’s still time to get an act together and sign up for
this year’s CAMP Rehoboth Follies. All it takes is a short skit (under
eight minutes), some lyric manipulation, a few friends, and a little bit
of courage (well, maybe more than a little bit)—and the occasional pink
tutu, of course. To sign up, call CAMP Rehoboth.
