Yikes! I was forced to deal with another issue of aging this past
week. I had cataract surgery. The drugs were great—allowing me to
forget much of it. Actually, it was not bad at all and I won’t
hesitate to have the second eye done.
The outcome of the eye surgery was quite dramatic. I was looking
forward to being able to read road signs better and see the bedroom
clock across the room. That happened the first day and I’m told it
will continue to improve for four to six weeks. What I was not prepared
for was the change in colors. I had no idea I was missing so much. I
walked into CAMP Rehoboth the day after the surgery and saw Murray
Archibald’s artwork on the wall. Wow! I knew the art was colorful but
I didn’t realize how vibrant the colors really are. I am appreciating
the art anew.
I started thinking about how we have times in our lives when we can
be walking around with things seemingly "normal" but somehow
dulled. (Do you remember Michael in Armistead Maupin’s Tales of the
City? Michael said that you can have a good job; you can have a good
relationship and you can have a good apartment/home? You just can’t
have all three at once.) I think that even if you have all three, you
can feel like something is missing. Life can seem dulled—not quite the
same thing, in my mind, as dull.
For me and for many people, I believe, what makes life more vibrant
is connecting with other individuals, connecting with the community and
being involved in making your community a better place. Whether you
contribute money, volunteer time or both, you end up feeling more vital
or alive. You appreciate your life and community more when you make
those connections. I think if you try it, you’ll find you are
appreciating your life anew. For so many of you in this great Rehoboth
Beach community, I know I’m "preaching to the choir."
