Believe it or not, we’re halfway through the summer but there is still
a lot of fun to be had. Like every summer, this one is unique. As more
women now live here or come here to vacation, the request for a variety
of activities has increased. In response to your variety of interests,
we are planning several distinctive events over the next few months.
Our first summer event is scheduled for Saturday, August 2 from 4 to
7 p.m. when the CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Project presents "The
Mautner Project at the Beach!" This incredible organization has
done so much for lesbian health and for lesbians and their partners who
are faced with living with cancer. So, come and meet their dynamic
Executive Director, Kathleen DeBold and their creative Development
Director, Meghan Duffy. It’s an opportunity to get to know our
national lesbian health organization and hear about their progress and
upcoming events. Sharon Messina/DJ Shark of Dune Tunes will spin some
cool tunes while everyone socializes and has fun. Tasty hors d’oeuvres
prepared by the fabulous Queenz Quizine, wine and beverages will be
served. Donations will be accepted and appreciated. It’s truly an
event not to be missed!
Our next event is planned for Friday, August 22 beginning at 7 p.m.
The CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Project and the Rehoboth Beach Film Society
will present No Secret Anymore: The Times of Del Martin and Phyllis
Lyon. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the
Australian Mardi Gras Film Festival, the Jury Award for Special Mention
at the Turin (Italy) International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and the
Jury Award for Best Documentary at the North Carolina Gay and Lesbian
Film Festival, it continues to receive awards and recognition for its
hard hitting story about these two astonishing women who are known as
the founders of the modern lesbian civil rights movement. They have been
lesbian partners for fifty years and are an inspiration for their impact
on our community’s political struggle. Location and ticket price is
still being determined but will be announced shortly. From 7 to 8 p.m.,
there will be hors d’oeuvres, wine and beverages, and a chance to
socialize with the director, Joan E. Biren (JEB), who also will
introduce the film. The film will begin shortly after 8:00 p.m. and runs
for close to two hours. There will be a question and answer session
following the film showing. So plan on joining us for an evening of fun
and good food and sitting back and being entertained and inspired by
these lesbian heroes.
We still are looking for women who are interested in working with us
on the art show for "Emerging Women Artists" that will take
place in the fall. It will be held at the CAMP office and courtyard. We
plan on making this a premier event for the women’s community in
Rehoboth. Be sure to check future issues of Letters for more details.
Contact Andrea at the CAMP office if you’re interested in
participating.
Gathering on Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m. to tee off with the Women’s
Project Golf League at Marsh Island Golf Club in Lewes has been a big
hit! If you’re interested in playing, don’t let the summer pass by
without getting out there and swinging a club. You’ll receive valuable
golf tips and a chance to mingle with the sporty set.
Don’t sit around and watch those summer reruns on television. We’re
going to be looking for you at these upcoming events. We have a strong
and vibrant women’s community here so we want everyone to participate
in all that we have to offer. Couples bring your friends and singles don’t
be shy. We always welcome your opinions and ideas so contact us at the
CAMP office or e-mail andrea@camprehoboth.com
with your thoughts. Have a productive and safe summer!
