A collection of recent paintings done by artists Liza Fleming and Ronald
Butt are on display at Rehoboth’s Café Zeus on Wilmington Avenue.
While
sitting on the beach at North Shores last year, the two artists
contemplated the idea of working side by side on the same canvas with
hopes that such a fresh approach would rescue each of them from the
non-productive ruts they found themselves in. So they decided to
experiment with the process of collaboration, and they chose mermaids
and mermen as their exclusive subject matter for one year.
Each were intrigued by both the human and fish-like qualities that
these sea creatures possess. They felt inspired to depict ocean themes
for an audience at the beach while also exploring themes of sensuality
and sexuality that might captivate an even broader audience.
Both Ron and Liza have found this experiment to be a true
intellectual endeavor. A true collaboration, which forced them to push
aside their egos, has resulted in a communication that transcends gender
and friendship. "We entertain each other’s ideas of color,
texture, style, and composition. In doing so, we’ve opened up avenues
that neither one of us would have explored independently", says
Ron. When asked which painting was her favorite in the series, Liza
replied, "our next one."
The two artists plan to continue with this collaborative effort. They
invite you to come to view their work and share in the excitement they
have experienced for the past year.
