The Way I See It
|
| by Steve Elkins, Editor |
Though the words "Come be a part of our C-A-M-P," (sung to the
tune of Y-M-C-A) may forever be stuck in my head, all of us here at CAMP
Rehoboth were pleased and excited by the success of this year’s CAMP
Rehoboth Follies. The goal of the Follies’ Production Team was to create
a fast paced, entertaining evening—and they did just that! My
congratulations to the Team (Murray Archibald, Fay Jacobs, Ric Kirby, Gene
Dvornick, Maureen Keenan, and Barb Ralph), to the troupes, to the crew,
and to Kathy Weir and all the volunteers who worked to make it a great
show. Special thanks, of course, need to go to Follies host and emcee
Christopher Peterson (and his stand-in Eric Peterson!) for using his
extraordinary talent to help make the evening a hit. Christopher’s
popular show Eyecons will continue its run at the Atlantic Sand’s Hotel
through Labor Day, so be sure and stop in to meet his new characters and
to say thanks for sharing them with us this summer. Congratulations are in
order for all the troupes—especially this year’s winners: The Delmarva
Divas for F is for Fight (First Place Gold Barbie), The Family Von Schlong
for Fa...A Long, Long, Way to Run, (Second Place, Silver Barbie), and
Victoria’s Secrets for Bewildered, Bothered...and Fabulous, (Third Place
Bronze Barbie). Thanks as well to this year’s judges—Follies Founder
Chris Riss; Cloud 9 owner John Berdini; Lori Kline of Lori’s Café; RB
Film Society Executive Director Sue Early; and Special Events Coordinator
for the Beebe Medical Foundation, Eric Davison—and on a personal note to
fellow "C-A-M-P" singers and friends Glen Pruitt and John Hulse.
With the Follies tucked safely under our (dance) belts, and tutus, the
time has come to turn all of our attention on the biggest event of the
summer—Sundance 2005. In its 18th year, this amazing event has raised a
lot of money over the years for SCAC and CAMP Rehoboth (last year we
cleared over $190,000). If you’re on the CAMP Rehoboth mailing list you
should have received information about being a Host, a Supporter, or a
Sponsor. If you’re not on the mailing list (and would like to be) and
are interested in being a part of this big Labor Day weekend extravaganza,
call the CAMP Rehoboth office or visit the Sundance website at
www.sundancebenefit.com. Though we will always accept new Hosts,
Supporters, and Sponsors, if you want to be listed on the printed material
for the event you need to sign up immediately.
The 2005 Rehoboth Beach elections will take place August 13, so we sent
a short list of questions to the six candidates. The responses to those
questions are a part of our 2005 Candidate Forum and can be found on page
8 of this issue. In the August election incumbent Rehoboth Mayor Sam
Cooper is being challenged by Bob Sokolove. Dennis Barbour, Dave McCarthy,
Ron Patterson, and Bill Shields are running for the two vacant seats on
the Board of Commissioners. The issue in this year’s election that
created the most controversy involves zoning changes in the floor to area
ratio (FAR) allowed in both residential and commercial property in the
city. A voter referendum on the changes is scheduled for September 10.
I have spent a lot of time this summer talking about the new CAMP
Rehoboth Community Center space at 37 Baltimore Avenue. We moved, if you
remember, right before the summer season officially began, and for most of
the summer have been trying to catch up. I think that most of us are
resigned to the fact that we won’t really get everything fully
functional until after the busy summer season, but each week we make a
little more progress. Within the next few weeks (and thanks to the hard
work of Michael Muller, Chris Sampson, Harvey Sharpe, and Bill Darley) the
Center’s library will be in shape to open to the community, giving us
two rooms on the second floor of the center that are available for outside
usage. Be sure to watch these pages for information about upcoming
Community Center events.
