| In the fall of 1998, Liz Lerman Dance Exchange
will present Dancing Bodies: Recovering Lives, a series of movement classes for lesbian
and bisexual women living with breast cancer. The sessions, which will be offered at no
cost to participants, are funded by a pass-through grant from the Avon Corporation and
administered through the Mary-Helen Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer. The
workshops will be facilitated by certified dance therapist Dr. Renata Georgetti and by
artists of the Dance Exchange company. Through a
series of 15 weekly sessions, Dancing Bodies:
Recovering Lives will synthesize dance, movement therapy
and the art making process in an effort to address the complex concerns of lesbian and
bisexual women coping with the realities of breast cancer. The workshops are conceived as
a complementary activity to traditional breast cancer support group therapy, and will
allow participants to achieve physical mobilily, identify and express both individual and
shared stories, and build community through a collaborative dance making process. The
sessions are intended to bring a positive focus to the recovery process and help
participants discover a renewed joy in movement.
Of the 15 dance sessions, 12 will be facilitated by Dr.
Georgetti, who will implement techniques she has developed through extensive work as a
performer, certified
dance therapist and her own recovery from breast cancer.
The other 3 sessions will be led by artists of the Dance Exchange company, who bring a
wide range of experience inspiring people at every level to use dance and storytelling to
gain personal insight and build community.
In addition to seeking participants for the program, the
Dance Exchange is also inviting lesbians and bisexual women living with breast cancer to
serve as community advisors to the project. For further information about Dancing Bodies:
