Intersection of Inspiration
The art of Siobhan Ridgway and the vision of Detail gallery owners lead
only to one conclusion—on rare occasions collisions are meant to be. In
this case it happened at rapid speed, an artist on the rise, a gallery
with much to prove in the discerning town of Rehoboth Beach.
An
intersection of their inspirations will be on display at Detail on
Saturday, August, 19, as gallery proprietors Michael Muller and Thomas
Boeke host an artist reception for Ridgway, an accomplished photographer
based in California.
Always charming, Siobhan promises no jet lagged persona, although much
of her new work is from an intense, recent travel though Europe.
Her remarkable images send a profound indication that there remain
binding threads within our hectic worlds. Taken with acute eyes, Siobhan’s
photographs capture humanity and history in lands as diverse as Ireland,
Italy and Slovakia.
Although she has traveled much of the world, Ridgway describes this
trip as a departure—taking lots of back roads and visiting smaller
towns.
"My experience in Europe was so touching and eye opening on what
our culture seems to lack. Once I stepped foot in Europe it was like I was
taken back 100 years ago, an old world. In this world the most important
things to people are tradition, history and family," she said.
"I met so many people with open hearts and a zest for life. These
people did not have much, yet their life was fulfilled."
In Slovakia, in particular, Siobhan traveled on isolated roads sparsely
populated and touched only by nature. Included in her new collection are
images of the landscape and people, such as an unforgettable farmer named
Dataki she met walking his cows to the next pasture.
"He was just so happy, and thrilled that I wanted to take a
portrait of him. I was just taken by his smile and ocean blue eyes. Just
watching his hands I could see the hard work he has done over his
lifetime," she said.
"Siobhan’s work is amazing. The diversity of her work is
inspiring," said Muller. "She is able to capture stunning
moments on film which draw the viewer into a real narrative story. One
that she has devised and one that allows the viewer to go on their own
journey."
Boeke and Muller opened Detail in the unique venue of a cedar-clad
cottage style building this spring. It’s a place where clients find an
eclectic selection of art and furnishings at varying price points.
"I think art in the home is a way of expressing your personality,
your own take on your environment. Art also has the ability to structure
your view of the day on what you have chosen to surround yourself with. It
seems all our customers are glad they braved the corner of Church Street
and Rehoboth Avenue and fought the traffic to get to such a unique
shop."
Detail is located at 117 Church Street just west of the Rehoboth Avenue
traffic circle.
The Aug. 19 wine and cheese reception is from 4-7 p.m. For more
