Out and About in Delaware's State Parks

by Helen Haughey

Brandywine Creek Will Take Your Breath Away

If you are looking for a place to walk or hike that will take your breath away, I recommend Brandywine Creek State Park. As you approach, you see fields of grass and a large stone wall, with huge columns of poplars lining the trails. You feel as if you stepped out of a painting, but inside realize you are in Brandywine Creek State Park. The park, located just 3 miles north of Wilmington, preserves the original landscape of the Brandywine School of Painters. While following the trail down to a stony path, you will hear sounds of bird chirping and fish splashing in the water. That water is actually Brandywine Creek which, when followed, brings you to Thompsons Bridge—always a very popular place for picnics!

In the spring and summer, Brandywine Creek trails are filled with hikers, bikers, and families, clearly a park for all ages. While winter and fall is not only a time for just people to visit the Brandywine, the park is also filled with deer blocking the trails and you are awarded a beautiful view of the Piedmont territory.

Another popular place for families in the winter is Hawk Watch Hill, a wonderful place to enjoy sledding and tubing on snowy days! Just close your eyes and imagine after all that horrible heat last week…the feeling of snow hitting your face as you slide down the only public sledding hill in Delaware!

While all of these activities seem to blur the landscape, if you look close enough you will see that the beautiful Brandywine is still unfazed and seemingly untouched by all the hustle and bustle. Creating that look that was featured in the film The Village, and of course all those Wyeth paintings!

Come to Brandywine Creek State Park, and enjoy the artistic and natural beauty of one of our amazing State Parks!
