One of the most exciting things about the
Sundance weekend extravaganza is the Sundance Auction. The auction was
not always a part of the event, but was added in 1990—the third
Sundance. “Everyone thought I was crazy,” says Steve Elkins, “but
I knew we had to do something else if we wanted to raise more money.”
Since that time, the auction has made a
tremendous difference in the amount of money raised each year. Last
year’s auction included more than 450 items that ranged from t-shirts
to expensive art, jewelry, and vacations. “The diversity of items is
what makes the evening so much fun,” Elkins says. “There are always
surprises.”
One of the big surprises for this
year’s event is a Vespa motor scooter from Larry Mylewski at Vespa
Rehoboth Beach on Rehoboth Avenue. Not only is it a great way to travel
around town, the Vespa’s sleek European styling promises to make it a
high bid item in the live auction.
Another high bid item comes from
Abizak’s. Known in the area for their “unique contemporary stuff,”
this year’s leather sofa from their Granada collection is sure to
cause a stir. Pam and John Sadler, Abizak’s owners, have been big
supporters of Sundance for years, both as auction donors and as sponsors
for the event.
Again this year there will be airline
tickets from US Airways, a full-page ad for a full year in Letters from
CAMP Rehoboth, and, thanks to Monica Parr and Emilie Paternoster, enough
Black and Decker tools and appliances to stock a new house. I.G. Burton
is giving a fancy Jeep bicycle, and new to the auction this year, is a
mattress, box spring and bed frame from Russell Stuckey at Mattress and
More. Ward Ellinger and Allen Jarmon have donated two kayaks with all
the accessories.
Another big item is the original of
Murray Archibald’s Sundance 2002 painting, titled enCIRCLES (of love).
Signed, limited edition prints of the Sundance painting are available
through CAMP Rehoboth for $45. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to
Sundance 2002. Prints from preceding Sundances are also available.
The
Sundance Auction is the first night of the Sundance weekend, Saturday,
August 31. The doors open at 7 p.m. Admission includes a cocktail buffet
by the Blue Moon Restaurant and an open bar all night. Tickets are $40
(or $60 for both nights), and are available at CAMP Rehoboth, Lambda
Rising, and on the Sundance Web site at www.sundancebenefit.com.
Sundance t-shirts are available for $20 each. Prints and t-shirts
can also be ordered on the Sundance Web site.
