World AIDS Day Art Contest/Exhibition
CAMP Rehoboth is conducting an art contest for World AIDS
Day 2006. The contest is open to middle school and high school students in
Sussex County, Delaware. The artwork submitted will interpret the theme—Stop
AIDS: Keep the Promise.
The latest statistics released by the Centers for Disease
Control establishes that 50% of all new HIV infections occur in young people
under the age of 25. In addition, national case surveillance data for people
ages 13 to 24 revealed that the burden of HIV/AIDS falls most heavily and
disproportionately on black and Hispanic youth. CAMP Rehoboth believes that
accurate, age-appropriate information is our best hope for reducing these
trends. The art contest is one way we hope to work with Sussex County school
districts to ameliorate this situation for our young citizens.
Students are encouraged to check out the website for
World AIDS Day 2006 at www.worldaidsday.org/.
Prizes for the winning students range from $250 for first place, a $50 gift
certificate for second place and a $25 gift certificate for third place for
each level, middle school and high school students. The winning students
work will appear in Letters from CAMP Rehoboth and be featured in the World
AIDS Day art show at CAMP Rehoboth from December 1 through the 11th and the
December art show at the Rehoboth Beach Library from December 13 through the
30th.
The art submitted will be judged on impact, relevance to
HIV/AIDS awareness, clarity of message, visual design and creativity. All
artwork must be mounted on 11 inches by 14 inches foam core. Photography,
water color, tempera, oil, pastels, pencil, ink, markers, collage or mixed
media will be accepted. Artwork must be delivered or mailed to CAMP
Rehoboth, 37 Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 by the November 1,
2006 deadline.
In addition to the students’ art, CAMP Rehoboth and the
Rehoboth Beach Library will also host an exhibition of art by HIV positive
artists. A call for art has been sent out for HIV+ artists to submit pieces
of art that visualize the impact HIV has had on their lives, communities and
loved ones. The HIV positive artists’ work will be on exhibit at the same
time as the students’ art, December 1st through December 11th at CAMP
Rehoboth with several pieces on exhibit at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library
from December 13th through the remainder of December. The purpose of the
exhibits is to promote increased awareness of AIDS/HIV to the general
public.

Kids Were the Focus of the YMCA’s Annual Baltimore Avenue Block Party
CAMP Rehoboth joined forces with the Sussex Family YMCA and a host of
sponsors to help make the second annual Baltimore Avenue Block Party a fun
time for all. More than 20 restaurants served food and local artists
displayed their work to the hundreds of guests who strolled the avenue as
great music filled the air on a beautiful September evening.
The event raised nearly $20,000 which will be used to
support the youth programs of the YMCA.
If you’d like to be involved next year, call Chris White at 302-296-9622.
