CAMP Safe:   Announces Fall Schedule

Even though summer is over, CAMPsafe staff remain very busy in their efforts to serve the gay and bisexual community of Sussex County. During the summer, the CAMPsafe program focuses its attention on doing outreach in the bars, guesthouses and beaches to reach locals and visitors to Rehoboth. Many people have come up to program staff to ask if there is anything to do off-season. The answer to that is YES! CAMPsafe is a year round program which serves the HIV prevention needs of both locals and visitors to Sussex County throughout the year.

During the fall and winter, the CAMPsafe program adds some items to its existing menu of services. Starting in November, CAMPsafe staff will be offering a bi-weekly support group called Boot Camp that talks about what is on the minds of many gay/bi men—sex! Boot Camp will focus on risk-taking and decision-making regarding sexual choices that many men make in their lives. CAMPsafe staff realize the importance for this group because so many gay and bisexual men have misinformation about sex, and may be taking health risks as a result. The goal of the group is to create a healthy environment where sex and risk-taking can be talked about without embarrassment. This group meets at the main office of CAMP Rehoboth on Wednesday evenings.

Another program that marks the entry of the fall season are CAMPchats. These informal chats bring together the community to learn new skills or gather information that is important to the lives of the GLBT population. These chats are held at coffee houses throughout Rehoboth each month. A professional speaker in the chosen topic comes to speak with the group for about an hour. The rest of the time is spent catching up with old friends or making new ones.

Rounding out our fall and winter programming is the Community Advisory Board (CAB) of CAMPsafe and program focus groups. These two components of the CAMPsafe program allow us to get feedback on how to better design services to meet the changing needs of the gay/bi male population in Sussex County. The CAB meets once a month and the focus groups are held during December and January.

As always, CAMPsafe will continue to provide free condoms and lube at various bars in Rehoboth and the main office on Baltimore avenue. Speaking of free—HIV Testing and Counseling and Sexual Health Counseling services are offered during the fall and winter. These programs are offered on a walk-in basis from 9–6 p.m. on Wednesday and Fridays, and 6-8 p.m on Tuesdays. In conjunction with Sussex County AIDS Committee, we offer free testing on Thursdays between 4-6 p.m. at their location at 107 South Street. For all other times and dates, please call CAMPsafe at 302-227-5620.
