It’s time to bring the curtain up on the Rehoboth Beach 2001 Autumn
Jazz Festival, October 18-21. Folks will be arriving from all over the
East Coast to take part in and attend this prestigious and joyous
festival.
With

spaces, and music for every taste and budget, the Rehoboth Beach Autumn
Jazz Festival grows bigger and more exciting every year. This year’s
Fest features big names like sax man David Sanborn, Rock and Roll Hall
of Famer Ike Turner and O’Jays lead singer Jeffrey Osborne.
From cool jazz to hot
Latin Soul, gospel to smooth riffs, Motown to blues, this festival has
it all.
Tickets for individual
concerts range from $10 to $48, plus awesome FREE concerts as well.
Call 1-800 29-MUSIC for
ticket information. While some concerts are sold out, the number of
events and diversity of music is staggering —so there will be
something terrific for everyone.
“A 10:30 p.m. concert
was added to help accommodate our visitors, and we need support for
these endeavors,” says Sydney Arzt of Sydney’s Restaurant, one of
the event’s biggest boosters.
Many Rehoboth area
restaurants, hotels and B&B’s are participating as official
lodging and sites for
the event. So check their web site at rehobothjazz.com.
“We’re particularly
excited about the participation of BET this year and the filming,”
says Festival President Dennis Santangini. “Not only is this great
publicity for the festival, but for the entire area. The film will be
broadcast nationally and that’s going to put a wonderful spotlight on
Rehoboth Beach.”
The festival began
Thursday, Oct. 18 with a party at Rudder-towne
featuring a taste of Rehoboth restaurants, music by the Pam Miller Jazz
Group, and a concert cabaret with Pucho and the Latin Soul Brothers.
Henry “Pucho” Brown has been a pivotal figure in the movement that
fused Latin, Soul, Jazz and Funk.
On Friday, Oct. 19,
Jeffrey Osborne will headline at the 8 p.m. performance at the Rehoboth
Convention Center, and at 10 p.m. The Ike Turner Revue is performing
under the tented deck at the Rusty Rudder in Dewey. At the new Atlantic
Sands Swan Ballroom, beginning at 10:30 p.m., The Jazz Channel presents
Cool Jazz Collective featuring a gathering of top notch players,
including keyboardist Marcus Johnson whose last five CDs have made the
Billboard Top 50 Jazz Charts. Not only will this be a great concert, but
it will give people the chance to check out the new ballroom at the
Atlantic Sands.
The
Festival continues on Saturday, Oct. 20
with a 1 p.m. concert at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center
featuring The Rippingtons—recently named Smooth Jazz Group of the Year
by Chicago’s Smooth Jazz Awards, and special guest performance by
saxophonist Eric Marienthal.
To show off the
marvelous talent of young jazz musicians, Nicola Pizza will present a
FREE concert, Youth Grooves, at the Rehoboth Bandstand at 2 p.m.
Saturday. The event spotlights young Delaware musicians and is hosted by
the award-winning Cape Henlopen High School Jazz band under the
direction of Barry Eli.
Another FREE concert is
planned for 4 p.m. Saturday back at the Rusty Rudder tent deck, where
Keisa Brown and the Rolling Thunder Blues band will be on hand. Her
electrifying style has been compared to big-name artists like Aretha and
Tina!
Saturday night’s big
attraction is the 9 p.m. Rehoboth Beach Convention Center concert with
featured performer saxophonist David Sanborn, one of modern music’s
premier instrumentalists. With one platinum, six gold records and 7
million albums sold, Sanborn is legendary for his saxophone music—a
treat for Rehoboth and Jazz Festival fans.
Meanwhile, at
Ruddertowne at 10 p.m. you can experience Anson Funderburgh and the
Rockets,
featuring Sam Myers. This band has a reputation as one of the most
authentic blues ensembles touring today. At The Atlantic Sands, the
Gerald Veasley Quintet performs at 10:30 p.m. in a benefit for the
American Red Cross Emergency Relief Fund. Or, spend the evening
wandering in and out of Rehoboth’s many night spots all featuring a
variety of jazz performers.
Jazz buffs will welcome
Sunday, Oct. 21. where they can enjoy a 10 a.m. Jazz Mass by Steven
Porter performed at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 18 Olive Ave. in
Rehoboth. Or head to Dewey’s Bay Center for a 10:30 a.m. gospel brunch
featuring The Black Voices, a gospel choir from the University of
Virginia. A 1 p.m. concert at Rehoboth’s Convention Center will
feature South African singer Jonathan Butler and benefit the American
Red Cross of Delmarva. A Grammy nominee for the hit “Lies,” Butler
will sing and speak of his homeland through African melodies and
rhythms, gospel and jazz.
Grand finale time for
the Autumn Jazz Festival is Sunday night with the Grand Jam at
Sydney’s Restaurant in Rehoboth. This annual gathering provides an
early evening conclusion to the festival. Guests include Marcus Johnson,
Jaared, Extremity with Perky Scott, Raphael Paris and others. It’s a
great chance to have an up close and personal jazz experience, performed
by performers from the festival weekend. The closing jam benefits the
