What a good idea. They’re going to make a weekend of it!
IT is the New Years’ Eve
celebration called the Starburst Gayla held for the past five years at
Rehoboth’s Convention Center.
And with New Year’s Eve falling
on a Monday night this year, it’s a sure thing that Rehoboth Beach will
be packed that entire weekend.
Recognizing an opportunity to
provide local women (and their men friends, too) and out-of-towners with a
reason to eat, drink and be merry in Rehoboth, the Gayla Committee rolled
up their collective sleeves and planned lots of weekend activities before
the big Gayla itself.
There will be a fantastic Saturday
Happy Hour at Cloud 9 on December 29th, a yummy Sunday Brunch at Cloud 9
the next day, and a special film showing that weekend sure to pique the
interest of the Starburst crowd.
Of course, for the final evening of
2007 and the early morning on 2008, the Convention Center will rock with
great dance music, an open bar, midnight champagne toast and a dessert
buffet.
Sponsorships and tickets for the
Gayla are on sale at CAMP Rehoboth already and the buzz is building. I
asked one of the event founders, Roni Posner, some of her thoughts about
the event.
FJ: What do you see as the
importance of having the event here in town?
RP: Especially this year, as we
make it a full, long weekend of events, we bring lots (literally hundreds)
of girls to town for lots of fun and a what-more-picture-perfect venue to
end one year and start another?
FJ: You’ve been involved a long
time. How do you think the event has grown. In size? In reputation?
RP: I am not sure of the exact
numbers, but I think we started with around 250-300 and now we are
approaching 500. I’ve heard, from many woman, local and not, that
the Starburst Gayla is the women’s annual event that they both love and
appreciate greatly. They look forward to it, each year, and they say,
repeatedly, that they wouldn’t miss it. And now, interestingly, we are
starting to see a greater mix of women, especially in age and geography.
And, they are attending in more and larger groups. (One of our
“wonderful problems” is having to re-think the ballroom space
configuration each year!)
FJ: If you weren’t one of the
organizers, you would go to the event because...
RP: It’s a fabulously fun, safe,
well-organized, beautiful, and indeed, rare event. We’re so lucky to
have and be able to count on it.
FJ: The fundraising component is
very important as well as the chance for the celebration. What do you want
to tell folks about the organizations receiving the generous donations?
RP: Both CAMP Rehoboth and
WomenHeart couldn’t be closer to our, well, hearts. Both organizations
work endlessly to provide us with better, longer lives. Thus, for all that
both of these organizations do, we must constantly find ways to
express not only our great appreciation, but also our ongoing support.
What better way than to “party-hearty,” all together, on New
Year’s Eve, in the names of these two priceless organizations?!
FJ: So what else do you want our
readers to know?
RP: We organizers (Natalie Moss,
Joan Glass, Maggie Ottato, Cathin Bishop, Laura Simon and I) make a great
team—we enjoy working together, and we are enormously proud of
what we have created and built for the women’s community—and for CAMP
Rehoboth, WomenHeart and the other organizations that the Gayla has
supported over the years. Throughout the planning, and of course
throughout each glorious Gayla night of song and dance, together with
hundreds of other gorgeous women, with every beat, our hearts sing. See
you there?
FJ: You bet; wouldn’t miss it!
And I am happy to report that the
plans for the other activities are going full speed ahead. See page 111
for further details—and be sure to make plans to come to town (or stay
in town!) for that very special weekend. Who
knows, the Starburst Gayla could become the East Coast’s biggest
women’s party! Let’s go for the record!
