This is the final issue of Letters from CAMP Rehoboth for this season.
Though the year has passed in a blur, as they all seem to me to do these
days, it has been a good season and I look forward to the next one. If all
goes according to plan—or at least to our revised plan—the new year
will be an especially exciting one, as construction for Phase Two of the
CAMP Rehoboth Community Center will begin on November 30 and will continue
at a fast pace throughout the winter and spring. We all have our fingers
crossed that the weather will be kind to us in the coming months. That
start date, of course, is dependent on a positive outcome from our
November 26 appearance before the Rehoboth Beach Board of
Adjustment—which, I believe, we will receive. Though we had a ceremonial
groundbreaking back in the summer we are planning actual one for November
30 at 10 a.m to which everyone is invited. (For details about the variance
and delay in construction see the CAMPmatters column in the October 12
issue on our Web site, www.camprehoboth.com.)
CAMP Rehoboth and Beebe Medical
Center work together on many occasions throughout the year by providing
free heath services to the public. That partnership will continue on
November 27 when free flu shots for those 18 and over will be offered from
11am-3 p.m. at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. For information about
future health related events and activities or HIV testing and counseling
contact our Health Services Director, Sal Seeley.
World AIDS Day is Saturday,
December 1 and in the Rehoboth area the day will again be observed with a
series of activities that include our traditional Candlelight Walk through
the streets of Rehoboth Beach and end with a short service and light
supper by the Blue Moon at Epworth United Methodist Church on Baltimore
Avenue. CAMP Rehoboth is again sponsoring a World AIDS Day Student Art
Contest and will open a show featuring the work of the students as well as
that of artist Eric Lerner at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center gallery
immediately preceding the Candlelight Walk. On November 18 a Wall of
Remembrance, Healing and Prayer will open in the front courtyard of
Epworth and everyone is encouraged to stop by anytime leading up to World
AIDS Day to add ribbons, names, prayers, or photos. For more information
about local World AIDS Day activities, to volunteer to help with the event
or to add a name to the list of those to be read as a part of the service
call CAMP Rehoboth or Sussex County AIDS Council. See page 46 for more
about this year’s World AIDS Day.
Ever heard Eartha Kitt or Bette
Davis sing “Santa Baby”? For a special holiday treat don’t miss
Christopher Peterson's’ sensational Holiday Show at the Atlantic Sands
Ballroom, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights, December 14-16. Best of all
for us, of course, a portion of every ticket sold will benefit the CAMP
Rehoboth Community Center. For reservations call the Atlantic Sands at
302-227-2511 ext. 660.
I can’t end the year without a
note about our new financial campaigns—The GEM Club and the Wish List.
Both are very important to the future of the CAMP Rehoboth Community
Center. The GEM Club is a permanent sustaining pledge campaign and the
Wish List a short term capital campaign. Many items on the Wish List would
make a great gift this holiday season. For information about the GEM Club
or the Wish List see pages 8 and 9 or contact Beth Fitton in the CAMP
Rehoboth office.
One of the things I love the most
about the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival is the doors it opens
on the world around us. This year’s festival especially made me think
about the importance of diversity—of respecting and learning from those
who are different from us. Peace, joy, and love to all this holiday
season.
