In Brief

Curl Up With A Good Book

Break out that 2005 calendar and circle Saturday, January 15. That way you’ll remember to stop by the Rehoboth Beach Library for the "Curl Up With A Good Book" Sale! (Don’t worry, it’s indoors!)

Once again, CAMP Rehoboth is teaming up with the Rehoboth Beach Library to offer used books, videos, and tapes at incredibly low prices—we’re talking 50 cents to $1.00, folks. All proceeds benefit the Rehoboth Beach Library.

So plan to stop by the library lobby between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, say hi to your friendly neighborhood CAMP volunteers, and pick up a few good books to read in the cold winter months.

The Rehoboth Beach Library is located at 226 Rehoboth Ave, diagonally across from the firehouse. For more information, call Kathy at 302-227-5620.

World AIDS Day Events To Be Held in Rehoboth Beach

"Have you heard me, today?"

More than 40 million people are living worldwide with HIV/AIDS. In Delaware, more than 3,000 currently live with HIV/AIDS. Approximately 450 of those live in Sussex County. All deserve the right to be heard and seen and respected as friends, neighbors, and loved ones.

That is the message of World AIDS Day, to be observed in Rehoboth Beach on Wednesday, December 1st. It will be a time to pause, reflect, and remember those who are living with and have been lost to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The 17th annual observance is sponsored by CAMP Rehoboth and Sussex County AIDS Council (SCAC).

"We can no longer be complacent about HIV or think that AIDS doesn’t, in some way, affect us all," SCAC executive director Steve Twilley said. "This year’s observance is, again, an opportunity for all of us to remember that we are all affected by HIV and AIDS, whether infected or not. We all know someone who is living with HIV, who has died from AIDS, or whose life is touched by a friend or loved one living with the disease."

World AIDS Day activities in Rehoboth will begin as the community gathers at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand for a brief program that will begin at 6:30 p.m. This will lead into a silent candlelight march through the downtown area and conclude with a "Service of Remembrance and Hope" at Epworth United Methodist Church, located at 20 Baltimore Avenue.

This service, to begin at approximately 7:00 p.m., will include the "Reading of the Names" of persons who have died of HIV disease. Names may be submitted for the "Reading of the Names" by calling SCAC at 302-644-1090.

The service also includes the display of panels from the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and special music by the Epworth church choir.

For information about World AIDS Day activities, call CAMP Rehoboth at 302-227-5620 or SCAC at 302-644-1090.

SCAC provides HIV prevention outreach and free counseling/testing in the communities of western Sussex County and supportive treatment services for people living with HIV/AIDS throughout Sussex.

Vagina Monologues to be Performed in Rehoboth

CAMP Rehoboth and Fay J. Productions are joining forces to bring a legendary theatrical event to Rehoboth Beach.

For two performances only, on January 28 and 29, Eve Ensler’s award-winning play The Vagina Monologues will be on stage in Rehoboth. The show, translated into over 35 languages and running in theaters all over the world, including sold-out runs off-Broadway and on London’s West End, is based on Ensler’s interviews with more than 200 women.

With humor and grace the piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength. The various monologues go from hysterical to heartbreaking, providing an evening that is both joyous and jarring, but ultimately empowering and theatrically stunning.

The Vagina Monologues has strong cross-over appeal, delighting audiences of women, men and teenagers. The legendary New York run had women coming to see the show two or more times, bringing their spouses, partners and teens to hear these remarkable stories.

The show began in a small café in New York and five years later it wound up in Madison Square Garden for an all star extravaganza featuring Calista Flockhart, Jane Fonda, Melissa Etheridge, Oprah Winfrey and more. What started as a play has become a national phenomenon, the bible for a new generation of women.

For the Rehoboth production, directed by Fay Jacobs, three professional performers will share the stage and bring these stories to life. Tickets for the production are $20 and will be available at CAMP Rehoboth. The show, which filled a New York theatre for years and even Madison Square Garden, will surely be a sell-out in Rehoboth.

Tickets are $20, and can be reserved at CAMP Rehoboth, 39 Baltimore Avenue or by calling 302-227-5620.

About two decades prior to releasing the book, Baraff created "MenCenter," an organization in Washington that served as a psychotherapy center that focused on men’s emotional concerns.

"Al is remembered as someone who cared deeply for people, as is evidenced by his more than 30 years dedicated to the psychological well-being of men," Pullen said.
