In Brief

World AIDS Day Ribbon Project

For several years, World AIDS Day has been observed in Rehoboth Beach with a Candlelight Walk and a Service of Remembrance and Hope at Epworth United Methodist Church. This year’s event continues that tradition, and also includes The Rehoboth Ribbon Project.

The goal of The Ribbon Project is to run a red ribbon along the Candlelight Walk route from the bandstand to 2nd St. and back down Baltimore Avenue to the Church where the service will take place. The Project will require the efforts of 25 teams of three people each.

Volunteers are needed to make The Ribbon Project a success. To participate, or for information about World AIDS Day, contact Murray Archibald, or call 302-227-5620. See page 28 for details.

CAMP Rehoboth will present An AIDS Timeline with artwork provided by Diane Debujk, Aina Nergaard-Nammack, Lynn M. Finaldi, Sondra Arkin, Chuck Pearson, Murray Archibald, and Ric Kirby. The Timeline will be displayed at CAMP Rehoboth from November 30-December 12. The opening reception is Sunday, November 30 from 2-4 p.m.

Lighting Spectacular Benefits Fire Company

Stop by Apple Electric from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday, November 29 and enjoy a dazzling 30,000+ lighting spectacular! Watch for Santa to arrive via fire truck to illuminate the 2003 holiday display.

Put on your scarf and mittens and be ready to have lots of fun. Dan Gaffney from WGMD will be doing a live broadcast, you can get your picture taken with Santa at the new gingerbread house, sample homemade holiday pastries from Oby Lee Coffee Roastery, and guess how many lights are on display to win a cash prize of $250.00. To participate in the contest simply decide how many lights you think have been used to create this extravaganza, and for a $5 donation you can submit your entry. All proceeds from the contest benefit the Lewes/Rehoboth Volunteer Fire Company. Show your community spirit and find out why Apple Electric makes the Griswolds seem conservative!

Apple Electric is located at 43 Route 24 in Rehoboth. They can be reached at 302-645-5105.

Beacon Closes to Make Way For New Ministry

The Board of Directors of Metropolitan Community Church of Rehoboth voted at its November meeting to close The Beacon Consignment/Thrift Store in Midway Shopping Center, effective January 15. Until that time, the store will have a store-wide Liquidation Sale. The Beacon has been a wonderful project for MCC Rehoboth; as a result of the store’s success, MCCR was able to purchase land on Plantation Road, fund a full-time pastor, and establish an ongoing presence for the community at the Worship & Ministry Center in Midway Center. Originally established as an all-volunteer effort by Mowry Spencer, The Beacon has been staffed for the past one and a half years by its paid manager, Jim Long. MCCR is grateful to all those who have volunteered their services to The Beacon for its nearly three years of operation and to all those who have donated and consigned articles for sale.

Beginning February 1, the MCC Rehoboth Worship & Ministry Center will expand to include a new ministry called "The Family Room," a drop-in center with comfortable furniture, games, and facilities for meetings, movies, book groups, lectures, and other events. This will be an outreach ministry to the entire community. Many "alternative" families, youth, and folks who don’t like the bar atmosphere yearn for a place to just "hang out," and MCCR will step into the breach. The possibilities are endless. The church is willing to host other groups at this location, now that there is plenty of available space. For information, please contact Kathryn Peoples-Wallace at 302.226.5135 or Rev. Tom Bohache at 302.645.4945.

Rainbow Families Hosts Social

On Saturday, December 6, Rainbow Families will host a cookie social at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center. Rainbow Families is a new organization hoping to bring together lesbians and gay men with children, in order to celebrate a sense of community. The organizers look to build a purely social parent’s support group. The cookie social will give families a chance to meet others who share their life experiences, and come away with both new friends and new ideas. Plus, you can enjoy the snacks and fun activities!

The social will take place at the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center, 39 Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach. RSVP is required, please email www.micaelatedford@hotmail.com or call Carol at 443-735-1427.

Roundup Returns to Rehoboth

The 2nd Annual Rehoboth Roundup will be held February 13-15, 2004 at the Atlantic Sands Hotel in Rehoboth Beach. The Roundup is an annual conference sponsored by the gay and lesbian recovery community. It offers 12-step members a forum in which to exchange information and educate each other about developing their spiritual, mental, social, and physical well-being by using the concepts of the Twelve Steps as a foundation for daily living. The Roundup is a three-day educational conference consisting of workshops, meetings, and social events featuring spiritual, interpersonal, and social activities that encourage and demonstrate the benefits of using spiritual principles as a basis for daily living. For more information go to www.rehobothroundup.org or call Karen S. at 302-226-0123.

Help Make Something Wonderful Happen

Are you an organizer? Do you like to tap your creative side? Or do you just like detailed work? If you’re any one of those or all of them, we need your help in planning the 2004 CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Conference Weekend. Our fourth annual Women’s Conference will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2004 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center. There will be plenty of activities and entertainment on Friday and Saturday evenings and even on Sunday. It will be a jam-packed weekend so get involved and make a difference.

We need your help on the following committees: 1) Conference & Events Setup; 2) Workshops and Presenters; 3) Vendors; 4) Merchandise/Door & Raffle Prizes; 5) Business/Conference Packages; 6) Corporate or Business Sponsorships; 7) Marketing & Publicity; 8) Conference Registration/Event Ticket Sales; 9) Volunteer Coordination.

Last year, we introduced new and different Conference workshops. We want to do the same in 2004 and already have some interesting suggestions. If any of you out there are interested in presenting a workshop at the Conference, we need to hear from you, also.

To serve on a Conference committee, contact Andrea Andrus, 302-227-5620 or e-mail at andrea@camprehoboth.com.
