World AIDS Day Events in Rehoboth
The 15th annual World AIDS Day will be
observed in Rehoboth Beach on Sunday, December 1, 2002.
In Rehoboth, and around the world, events
will offer an opportunity to remember those we have lost to AIDS, celebrate
the lives of those who live with HIV/AIDS, and honor those who continue to
make a difference in the battle against the disease.
This year’s World AIDS Day theme is
“Stigma & Discrimination,” and will seek to focus attention on the
terrible problems of fear, denial, stigma, and discrimination that have
always accompanied this epidemic. Around the world, the social phenomena of
HIV and AIDS are as powerful as the biological and medical concerns.
Today, stigma and discrimination have become
the biggest barriers to effective HIV/AIDS prevention and care. Fear of
discrimination may prevent people living with HIV from seeking medical care
or from even acknowledging their HIV status in public. Only by confronting
the issues of stigma and discrimination can the true scope of the epidemic
be understood.
In Rehoboth Beach, the celebration of World
AIDS Day will once again focus around a Candlelight Walk and a Service of
Remembrance and Hope. The Candlelight Walk will began at 6:30 p.m. with a
short program at the Rehoboth Beach bandstand (Rehoboth Avenue and the
Boardwalk), and end at Epworth United Methodist Church on Baltimore Avenue.
The Service will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the church, and will be followed by a
light supper provided by the Blue Moon.
As a part of the World AIDS Day event, a
number of The Names Project’s quilts will be on display at Epworth all day
Sunday, December 1. The quilts, created as remembrances of those who have
died, offer a visible reminder of the history of AIDS. “It’s important
for all of us to see these quilts,” says Murray Archibald, chair of the
Rehoboth Beach World AIDS Day committee. “They remind us of the
devastation the disease cut through our lives, and they remind us not to
give up on our efforts to educate a younger generation.”
The service will include the “Reading of
the Names” of persons who have died of HIV disease. To have a name
included in the service, or for more information about World AIDS Day
activities in the area, call the SCAC office, 302-644-1090, or CAMP
Rehoboth, 302-227-5620.
Celebrate Rehoboth’s Community Spirit
It’s time to celebrate! Rehoboth Beach Main
Street and Nicola Pizza are teaming up once again for the Ninth Annual
Community Unity Spaghetti Dinner, on Sunday, December 8, from 4-7 p.m. at
the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.
The Community Unity Dinner is fast becoming a
treasured Rehoboth tradition, as dozens of Rehoboth Beach organizations,
many wonderful merchants, and a delightful cross-section of our diverse
community come together to produce and enjoy this event.
The dinner serves as a celebration of
Rehoboth’s community spirit and also an occasion to honor one very special
citizen—someone who has volunteered time, energy, and really given back to
the community over the years.
This year Main Street will be honoring
Representative John Schroeder for his years of service to the community.
Everyone’s invited to the Rehoboth Beach
Convention Center on Sunday, December 8 for a terrific all-you-can-eat
spaghetti dinner, holiday music, and entertainment for the whole family.
It’s a great pre-holiday get together where you can enjoy a great dinner
and a fun evening with friends and family! The dinner menu will include
mountains of spaghetti, meatballs, salad, dessert, and a beverage and will
be served buffet style through the generous volunteer efforts of the
Rehoboth Beach Homeowners Association, VIA, city officials, state government
representatives, CAMP Rehoboth, other civic organizations, and anyone else
interested in making this a true community unity effort!
You never know what celebrities you’ll
discover scooping spaghetti and serving salad! It’s fun, filling, and all
the proceeds go toward Rehoboth Beach Main Street’s programs for downtown
Rehoboth Beach.
Be sure to leave room for dessert, because
the CAMP Rehoboth crew will be serving the goodies!
The Community Unity Outstanding Citizens
Award Plaque will be presented at 6:15 p.m. during the event. Admission to
the Ninth Annual Community Unity Dinner is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3
for children ages six to eleven, and $1 for children five and under. Tickets
may be purchased at the door.
Sponsors for the 2002 Community Unity Dinner
(to date) are Nicola Pizza (who donates the pasta, meatballs, sauce, and
fabulous chefs!) Prudential Gallo, REALTORS, Blue Moon Restaurant, CAMP
Rehoboth, Rams Head Tavern, McDonald’s, Café Sole, Celsius, City of

downtown Rehoboth Beach on Monday evening, December 2, despite construction
on Rehoboth Ave.
Set to start at 6 p.m., the parade will begin
at King Charles and Philadelphia Streets, march to Second Street and turn
east on Rehoboth Avenue. As usual, it will circle the bandstand and continue
west to the Convention Center.
A truly local tradition, the parade will
feature more music, more costumes, and more fun than ever. Dozens of local
groups, bands, and participants have already volunteered their services.
As
usual, the parade entrants will be judged, with prizes being awarded at the
Christmas Party immediately following the parade at the Convention Hall.

Zwaanendael Gallery of Art opens in
downtown Lewes
Just in time for the holiday season, historic
downtown Lewes, Delaware, has gained a new gem in its collection of unique
shops, restaurants, and cafes—the Zwaanendael Gallery.
Located at 142 Second Street in downtown
Lewes adjacent to the Zwaanendael Inn, the gallery will feature original
works of exceptional art by local, regional, and national artists.
Zwaanendael Gallery is the brainchild of
recent Lewes residents Michael Sprouse and George Thomasson, owners of
eklektikos gallery of art in Washington, D.C.
Sprouse, an award-winning artist of international acclaim, is also
the curator of the D.C. and Lewes galleries. With over a decade of
experience in the fine art market, Sprouse has big plans for Zwaanendael
Gallery.
“Zwaanendael Gallery will feature new
exhibits monthly, which will keep the art fresh and exciting. Opening
receptions at the gallery will take place on the first Friday of each month
from 6 to 9 p.m. Refreshments will be served and the public is encouraged to
attend. “It gives the community a monthly opportunity to get involved
culturally and socially”, says Sprouse. “Folks get to come out, meet
each other, discuss or purchase their favorite art works, and quite often,
meet the artists themselves. My goal is to get other downtown businesses to
take part in First Friday as well. The Friday openings have worked very well
in other parts of the country, including Dover.”
“It’s the perfect event for an already
growing downtown Lewes nightlife,” says Sprouse. “The more other
businesses take part, the more successful it becomes for everyone.”
The grand opening reception for Zwaanendael
Gallery is scheduled for Friday, December 6, 2002 from 6 to 9 p.m. The
exhibit features work by well-known watercolorist Susan Herron, Richmond
artist Steve Perrault, and Colombian artist Juan Bernal. Also on display are
new works by artist Michael Sprouse himself.
Zwaanendael Gallery, located at 142 Second Street
in Lewes, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more
information on the Zwaanendael Gallery call 302-645-1005.
