As the CAMP Rehoboth Women’s Project approaches the third year of our
existence, we believe it’s an appropriate time to talk about who we
are and what we do and answer the question, “What is the Women’s
Project?” We hope through this article and subsequent ones that we can
answer this question and heighten interest in and understanding of the
Project.
The Women’s Project was created in late
1999. It was the brainchild of the CAMP Rehoboth Project Advisory
Committee who first identified the need for education, services, and a
social environment for the women of our community. Following that
meeting, a few of us from the Project Advisory Committee came together
and established the Women’s Project. We developed a mission statement
that continues even today to be our driving force. Our mission is “to
provide education, health, and support services, and a social
environment that assures that the needs of the women’s community are
met.” In an effort to embrace the spirit of all women in our
community, we began to plan our first annual Women’s Conference on
Financial, Health and Legal issues. Needless to say, the first
conference was a success and our second conference held in 2002 was
bigger and better than the first. We are now engaged in the planning
process for our third annual Women’s Conference to be held in April of
2003. We are excited about the growing interest in attendance and we are
planning an expanded weekend with nationally known entertainment and
special guests.
We remain an all-volunteer group with an
Executive Committee comprised of some of the original founding members
and a Working Committee of individuals who have significantly supported
the Project. On December 3, the Working Committee will meet to establish
much needed sub-committees. We will be seeking volunteers who are
interested in serving on the following committees:
• Finance and Marketing
• Fundraising
• Health Education and Services
• Outreach
• Special Events
• Volunteer
• Women’s Conference
Work will begin in early 2003 to
establish a Community Advisory Committee. We will be asking some leaders
in our women’s community to be a part of this important group to help
us identify ongoing needs and meet our goals. The Community Advisory
Committee will meet with members of the Executive Committee on a
quarterly basis.
Mark your calendar for these important
dates:
• Health Days—1/11/01 (Smoking
Cessation); 2/01/03 (Bone Density Screening); and 2/11/03 (Blood
Pressure Screening)
• Volunteer Sign-Up Event—1/03 (Day to be announced)
• Women’s Conference—4/11, 4/12 and 4/13
We are currently seeking individuals who
may be interested in presenting at our April conference. Additionally,
we are seeking vendors who will host display tables at the event. If you
are interested in either of these, please submit your name, credentials,
and the topic that you would like to present or the information you
would like to display.
Soon we will have a Women’s Project web
page on the CAMP Rehoboth website so you can stay up-to-date. We’ll
let you know when it’s done, so you can access our information 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. As always, we welcome your questions and
comments. We hope you will consider joining us as a volunteer.
