As I was lying in bed watching T.V., about to switch from ABCs Sunday Morning, at the end of its broadcast, to CBS to watch Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood, as is my habit, preferring the easy going Mr. Osgood to the Christian Right ramblings of James Kennedy, I was pulled up short by the cautionary advice that the program about to be aired contained graphic, disgusting, immoral and offensive material and that I might want to shield my family from what was about to follow. The Coral Ridge Hour had never done much to attract, let alone hold my attention, however, with such a build up, I must admit my curiosity was piqued. So, I allowed Mr. Osgood to dangle while I indulged my fancy with notions of what possible dirty doings the Christian Right could be up to on this beautiful Sunday morning.
The subject of the Christian Right message broadcast to the entire nation this morning by Dr. Kennedy concerned the reckless abandon and profligate spendthrift practices the Federal Government employed to promote "the homosexual lifestyle", to the tune of $1.2 billion, annually, much of which is cloaked in the guise of AIDS info-mercials. The contents of the program laid out before me during the next sixty minutes was truly vulgar, disgusting, immoral, and graphic, living up to the advance billing Dr. Kennedy gave it, albeit not always for the reasons Dr. Kennedy intended. His own part in this display added much to the unsavory nature of the program.
Not since the propaganda films of Dr. Joseph Goebbels aimed at the discreditation, humiliation, and degradation of the Jews, have I witnessed such a harangue and diatribe targeted at a particular segment of society. The gay community could not have been held in any worse light on publicly broadcast T.V. by the good Christian pastor. He spared nothing, pulling out all the stops, showing the most inflammatory images of gay activities with no greater ambition than hate mongering from the pulpit. Much of the footage concerned Gay Pride Day activities... what a fertile field to cultivate hate in the general population. You know how we are, and I hope will remain undeterred by this shameful manipulation by the likes of the Rev. Kennedy.
There was a succession of stories about repentant years of torture in the homosexual lifestyle, exposed to abuse of drugs, alcohol and physical and mental cruelty as if such were the sole providence of the homosexual lifestyle. One of them related his salvation from our lifestyle to the greater glory of God by a vision of the living Christ from his cross. As a young man on the verge of suicide, he had his soul redeemed from everlasting damnation with the comforting words that whenever he was about to fall or lapse back into his life of immorality and bottomless sin that he should think of Christ on the cross, having died for our sins, and the man would receive the requisite strength necessary to fend off Satan and repel the demons about to engulf him. Others recounted less spectacular conversions but the general and unmistakable impression was that they all came back from the depths of hell to the light and the glory.
The hour long litany of horrors on the homosexual lifestyle ground down to the inevitable plea for money to sustain the good Rev. Kennedy in his lifestyle. Also, to request a questionnaire to be filled out and sent to the viewers Congressional Representatives voicing their opinion of the approval or disapproval of this great subsidy of the homosexual lifestyle by the Congress with their tax dollars, or at least $1.2 billion of them.
I would like to thank Dr. Kennedy for his generous offer and encourage as many of my fellow members and participants in the gay community and "homosexual lifestyle" as possible, to take Dr. Kennedy at his word, write him and request that he send his questionnaire. Tell him that you have heard of his splendid opportunity to make your opinions known to your Congressional Representative regarding the tax dollars spent on the "promotion" of the homosexual lifestyle through the good office of the very Christian Dr. Kennedy. Such an opportunity is far from a daily occurrence and we should all take full advantage of the munificence of Dr. Kennedy.
Please write: Dr. James Kennedy, P.O. Box 40, Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33302, and by all means mind your manners, and thank him for providing us all with the rare opportunity to avail ourselves of the concern for the way we live by the Christian Right. I heartily encourage you all to petition the Reverend for his questionnaire. No one need feel any obligation to financially support this endeavor made from the powerful position of a televised pulpit to untold millions. Neither should this worthy enterprise be snubbed by our community, without whom after all there would have been no such sermon and fervent appeal for "more money" on this clear, crisp Sunday morning not a full month following the celebration of the risen Christs triumph and victory over death, hell, sin, all evil and eternal damnation!
Please, Steve, as the Editor, employ your journalistic skills to alert members of our community to this hateful appeal from Dr. Kennedy, who used the public airways to deliver his message to America this Sunday morning. Exhort them please to take and make full use of it, as I do.
Sincerely,
Roy Groves, Rehoboth Beach
