She had intended to relax, take the summer off from her teaching job outside of Washington where she taught Special Ed to kids with learning disabilities. She came to Rehoboth, and after a whole week of relaxing she walked into Cuppa Jo and ended up pouring coffee and making sandwiches and friends the rest of the summer. She returned to Washington on Labor Day.
"When I walked in the classroom that first day back and faced those kids I just screamed Oh my God, what have I done?" Lori says, laughing. "I loved my students, my peers, my career...but something had changed in me that summer. I realized how stressful my life had become not only in teaching but in living in DC."
So, in April 1996 Lori resigned teaching (at least for now) and moved to Rehoboth. She resumed her old job at Cuppa Jo, and also took on the assignment of Assistant Manager at the Rehoboth Guest House.
Earlier this year Lori had the opportunity to assume the lease at the former site of Cuppa Jo, and she happily took it over. "The coffee shop had become a part of who I am," she explains, "and I love the courtyard in front of Lambda Rising and Camp Rehoboth. Its just the place to be in the summer."
With her award winning smile and easy going, heart filled personality, the new place could only be called Loris, but as she long dreamed of having a place called the Oy Vey Cafe, thats part of it, too. Much more than a coffee house, Loris menu will feature light breakfast items such as bagels, salmon, fruit plates, pastries and scones. Lunch will be the main focus of her menu, with over a dozen sandwiches such as fresh roasted turkey breast, corned beef, veggies, roast beef and salmon. Brie and fruit, fabulous breads, and award winning desserts will round out her menu.
Look for Lori, with longtime friend Mary Beth Dwyer who will be working by her side all summer, at 39 Baltimore Avenue outside Lambda Rising. Summer hours are 7:00 to midnight; open every day.
As long as were talking coffee... A weekend without those light, fluffy, perfect Belgian waffles from Dream Cafe? I dont think so! Usually I alternate between them and an icing-drizzled cinnamon roll appetizer with a cranberry-orange muffin and chocolate croissant entree, with a grande coffee too, please. (Yes, they do serve healthier items, too, like fresh yogurt and fruit). With fresh fruit shakes that will send you to heaven (try the Blue Hawaiian), a Key West juice bar that features fresh squeezed fruit and vegetable juices (the only place in town), and just plain fabulous lunch and light dinner entrees, the Dream Cafe (26 Baltimore Avenue) is, well, dreamy! Owners and partners Anne Marie Sopko and Sue Early are back for their second year, and are now adding sorbet, ice cream and frozen yogurt to the menu! Yum!! Open 7 days 7:00 to 11:00.
Meanwhile, up the street at the Coffee Mill (127-B Rehoboth Mews, between Baltimore and Rehoboth, 1st and 2nd), the only thing that remains the same this year is the name, as new owners Steve Webster and Wayne Lemon have revamped everything. For breakfast, a varied assortment of fresh, spectacular muffins and bagels line the showcase (including lo-fat); four kinds of delicious foccacia with toppings like spinach and feta, as well as cold pasta, fruit and veggie salads are for later in the day. The colorful new interior features a casual living room setting with couches and stools surrounded by creative gifts. The Coffee Mill specializes in organic coffees and always has an array of flavored coffees as well. Hours 6:00 a.m. to midnight, until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
