Beach Rush? It's the Middle of Winter! by Tom Minnuto That's right, kids. It may be the middle of winter, but it's time to start thinking beach, beach, beach. Forget the snow and ice, and start considering where it is you will be spending your weekends this summer. If your answer is Rehoboth, then hurryyour time is almost up to find a Summer 2000 beach house! On Sunday, February 6th, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., I am hosting CAMP Rehoboth's seventh annual Beach House Rush Party at the Lizard Lounge (1520 14th Street, NW) in Washington, DC. Admission is $5.00. Grab your beach blanket and come on down because in a room jam-packed with lease-holders this is your best chance of finding the perfect house for the summer. Yeah, you may have to cough up a pretty penny or two in order to reserve your space in a house, but it will be worth it when Spring arrives and you realize you won't have to spend another grueling summer in the city. Here's the drill: Lease-holders wear a blue name tag; prospective share buyers wear red. Elbow rubbing ensues, and before you know it, you've got several leads on a place to call your own for the summer. When making your final decision about a house, consider the following: Where is the house located? Can you walk to the beach, bars, shops and restaurants? Is there parking? How many bedrooms does the house have? Will you have a roommate or two or three? Who are the other housemates? How many bathrooms are there? What is the cost of the share vs. other houses? Do you have to pay extra for utilities? Is there a security deposit? And don't forget the age-old question: Does the house host a big summer party? A party means joy for some, headaches for others. Choose wisely. The annual Beach House Rush Party is the best place to ask these questions and more. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to register to be on the Beach House Contact List so Lease-holders can call you with share information long after the party is over. As a tradition, The Rush Party gives out wonderful door prizes, which are generously donated from Rehoboth area businesses. There is also music by DJ Kostas, and dancing for anyone who gets the urge. Who says you can't have fun in the middle of winter? For further information regarding the event, call 703-920-2252. Or get listed on www.BeachHouseNetwork.com. Gay Men's Health Conference Update Dr. Stephen Goldstone, Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery, Mount Sinai School of Medicine and author of the book The Ins and Out of Gay Sex, in cooperation with AIDS Delaware, will present a one-day Gay Men's Health Conference in Wilmington, Delaware. The conference will is Saturday, March 25, 2000 from 10 a.m. 4 p.m. Titled "Gay Men's Health: 2000 and Beyond," the conference will focus on issues concerning the health of gay men and emerging health challenges. Presenters will be specialists, physicians and experts in the fields of medicine, mental health, and holistic health, just to name a few, and a series of interactive workshops will take place throughout the day. Some of the other outstanding presenters at the Delaware Gay Men's Health Conference include: Chris Bartlett, of The Safeguards Project in Philadelphia, which is a gay men's health initiative that has been used as a model throughout the country; Dr. Nicholas Ifft, a well-known Philadelphia physician; Philadelphia dentist Joe Abate; Dr. George Benes, a Wilmington-based gastroenterologist; and more. "The whole idea behind the conference is to provide attendees with useful resources to take control of their own health care and inform gay men about emerging health challenges," said Allen Reese, Executive Director, AIDS Delaware, which is a GPPN business member. "Many gay men feel uncomfortable talking about health concerns even with their own health care providers. The conference will make it easier for gay men to discuss such topics as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), aging, holistic health options, sexual relationships, doctor/patient relationships, and more, in a comfortable environment." The conference will be held at Chase Manhattan Bank, 802 Delaware Avenue in Wilmington. The Greater Philadelphia Professional Network (GPPN) will host a wine and cheese reception afterwards. In addition, a film about the circuit party phenomenon, titled Got 2B There, will be shown after the reception. The cost is $15 per person, by March 1, and $20 after that date, and a limit of 100 people.
