Only ten short years ago John and June Phillips saw a "For Sale" sign in the window of T's Fitness Center, and just three weeks later they were the proud new owners. Their new facility, located on the Boardwalk at Virginia Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, was promptly renamed Body Shop Fitness. A gym on the beach had been a dream of John's as long as June could remember. While vacationing in Rehoboth during the spring of 1991, they saw that "For Sale" sign, and the rest is history. Changes would be made in the equipment each summer, and after 7 years, John and June decided it was time to be open year round. They moved from Pennsylvania to Delaware to make a go of it. The uniqueness of the Body Shop is two-fold. It is the only gym in Rehoboth that offers a view of the ocean, enabling members to walk, stair climb, or ride a bike while watching dolphins frolic and pelicans dive for food. The helpful, friendly staff is also a plus. They try to know every member's name in order to make even the most timid enthusiast feel comfortable. John Phillips has been an athlete throughout his life, with wrestling, running, and football being his strong sports. He has been a personal trainer for 9 years and passionately motivates his clients, who range in age from 11 to 60, to be the best they can be. John also loves working with young athletes and often volunteers his services to both the Seashore Striders Running Club and the Rehoboth Elementary wrestling team. June Phillips is a massage therapist and a personal trainer. She started doing massage when a doctor prescribed massage for pain management. "I knew after my first massage that I wanted to learn massage to help others," June says. June is a member of the American Massage Association and Nationally Certified, and has been practicing massage since 1993. She gears her personal training toward the adult female as she feels she can relate strongly to their needs. Kent Anderson, a new personal trainer, was drawn to helping others due to a medical condition. Suffering from congestive heart failure due to obesity at an early age, Kent started exercising and following a healthy diet. He lost 150 lbs in less than one year and is still losing. An inspiration to many, he is continuing his education to add a nutrition certification. Bob DeGregory, a massage therapist with Body Shop Fitness for seven years, is licensed by both the city and the state and specializes in myofascial release and deep tissue massage. For three years, Emily Martin has been greeting customers and making protein shakes. In the fall, she will say goodbye to Body Shop Fitness in order to continue her education at the University of Delaware. In celebration of it's Tenth Anniversary, Body Shop Fitness will offer new members three training sessions, a Body Shop tee shirt and a massage. Their mission is to promote health and fitness to people of all ages. If you haven't been by the Body Shop in a while you should stop by and take another look. Body Shop Fitness, located at the Boardwalk and Virginia Avenue, is open seven days a week, year round. You can reach them at 302-226-0920. There's More Than Enough LOVE for Us To Share In what has become a Fourth of July tradition in Rehoboth Beach, the sixth annual LOVE dance event at the Convention Center raised over $40,000 for local charities including the Sussex County AIDS Committee (50%), CAMP Rehoboth (30%), The Women's Project of CAMP Rehoboth (10%) and the Cape Henlopen School District (10%). "We're especially thankful to LOVE chair Mark Aquirre," said Murray Archibald, President of SCAC and CAMP Rehoboth. "He's worked very hard to make this event happen. We also want to thank all the sponsors and hosts and volunteers whose efforts made the evening such a success." According to Mark Aguirre, "I was committed to raising money for a wider range of community organizations. I also wanted to include more women in producing and participating in the event. For the first time, we are giving money to the women for programs of special interest to them." Over the years the LOVE benefit has raised money for a variety of organizations including Washington's Food and Friends, HERO in Baltimore and the AIDS Information Library in Philadelphia.
