LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
The Way I See It |
by Steve Elkins, Editor |
Is it just me, or does this summer seem busier than ever? Every weekend is filled with events and parties and art openings and fundraisers, it's impossible to make it to everything. Every once in a while it makes me nostalgic for the days when you could come to the beach without a calendar or a cell phone. Actually, now that I think about it, it makes me a little nostalgic for the days when I could make it to the beach at all! talk about nostalgia (and fundraisers), if you want to stroll down Rehoboth's memory lane, don't miss the new Rehoboth Beach Memoirs by James Meehan. The coffee table style book is full of old and new Rehoboth Beach memories, from its founding as a Methodist church campground and continuing to the present. And the fundraising part of all this? If you buy your copy from us, Rehoboth's present day "CAMPground," $10 of the $35 price will be donated to CAMP Rehoboth's Community Center Project. Stop by the office and pick up a few copiesit makes a great gift for family and friends. And when you are at our office, order one of the tropical party umbrellas supplied by Shore Haus and displayed in the CAMP courtyard. The umbrellas are $100 each with all profits benefiting the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project. It would be hard to spend any time in Rehoboth this summer without hearing about our new CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project. In fact, one of the primary goals of the Project's committee for this summer is to get the word out about plans for the Community Center. It is an ambitious project, especially since we want to keep it in downtown Rehoboth, but I have great confidence in the power of this community to do what it sets out to do. On page 6, Dan Goren provides an update on what is happening in the Project's various committees. All meetings of the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project, the CAMP Rehoboth Project Advisory Committee and their sub-committees and programs are always open to anyone who would like to get involved. Much of the work for the remainder of the summer will take place in the sub-committees, with the next meeting of the full Project Advisory Committee set for September. For more information or to get involved, call the CAMP Rehoboth office at 302-227-5620, or stop by 39 Baltimore Avenue and fill out a volunteer form. One of the great new additions to the Rehoboth area cultural scene is the Henlopen Theater Project's first real season. From now through early August the Project will provide a series of performances that include our own Kristen Foery's presentation of Stones; J for J starring John Ritter and Bruce Davison; The National Players of the Olney Theatre in Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona; Sada Thompson and Len Cariou in Ancestral Voices; and direct from New York City and DC, the 2000 Obie Award winner Another American: Asking and Telling, written and performed by the remarkable Marc Wolf. The opening night performance of Another American: Asking and Telling on Wednesday, July 19, and the cast party at Celsius afterwards will benefit the CAMP Rehoboth Community Center Project. Call CAMP for the details. I couldn't talk about fundraisers at this point in the summer without saying something about SUNDANCE 2000. In its thirteenth year, SUNDANCE has become one of the largest fundraisers in the Stateand in fact was voted "best fundraiser" by Delaware Today magazine readers. Benefiting Sussex County AIDS Committee and CAMP Rehoboth, it is a great way to get involved with the communityand to have a good time. We are currently sending out sponsor packages and the host letters will follow in the next week or so. If you are not on the mailing list and would like to be a part of this amazing event, call or come by the CAMP office. Working on this event is an extraordinary experience and the friends we have made in the process will last a lifetime. Whether as a sponsor, a supporter, a host, a volunteer, or an auction donor, there are many ways to participate. And besides, how can you resist The Super-duper Ultra Iridescent Rainbow Revolution! |
