Make a Difference by Dining at the Beach Surf's Up for "Dining Out for Life." On Sunday, June 11th, AIDS Delaware along with Delaware Today magazine, Agouron Pharmaceutical, Inc., and the Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce bring this 10- year-old event to the Delaware beaches for the first time. "Dining Out for Life is a wonderful fundraising event. It's a fun and easy way for the community to get involved and help support us. Until now, how-ever, beach restaurants haven't been able to join in, because the event occurs each year in March, the off-season for many beach businesses," says Allen Reese, executive director of AIDS Delaware. "Because our state's beaches have so many restaurantsthere are almost 100 eateries in one square mile of Rehoboth alonewe thought we'd create a special 'Dining Out for Life' event just for the beach." Called "Dining Out for Life at the Beach," the event will benefit both AIDS Delaware and P.L. Active, a Sussex County social services organization for those infected with HIV or AIDS. P.L. Active partnered with AIDS Delaware in putting the event together. "They did a fantastic job of getting restaurants to join the event as well as obtaining prizes to give away," Reese adds. Eleven of the shore's best gourmet, family and fun restaurants are already on board ready to donate a portion of all receipts from June 11th, including Celsius, Second Street Grill and Dogfish Head Brewery and Eats. From Rehoboth to Lewes to Bethany, diners will be raising money for AIDS Delaware and P.L. Active while they feast. Every diner will have the chance to win the grand prizea Myrtle Beach weekend getaway. Plus, one subscription to Delaware Today will be given away at each participating restaurant. With the event slated for after the official opening of the beach season, Reese predicts that turnout will be high. "We have wonderful restaurants committed to this event. All of which already are filled to capacity on a weekend evening. We expect we'll have a very successful event." So, head to the beach the weekend of June 11th and join us for the inaugural Dining Out for Life at the Beach. You can get the most current list of participating restaurants by checking out our website at www.aidsdelaware.org or giving us a call at 302-652-6776. We'll see you at the beach. New Works by Brian Petro at Blue Moon Brian Petro is back in Rehoboth Beach for a show at the Blue Moon, 35 Baltimore Avenue, beginning with an opening reception, Sunday, June 4th, from 3 to 5 p.m. and running through the end of June. The work is titled Produce and is a significant departure from Brian's previous body of work which focused on architectural and sculptural images inspired by his recent trips to Rome and London. Produce is Brian's interpretation of still lifea study of the simple beauty of fruits and vegetables. Brian's technique of photographing the fruits and vegetables and then using a multi-step thermal transfer process to manipulate and move the image onto a heavy gauge watercolor paper creates an image that is at once stark and melancholy but also familiar and welcoming. Brian's technique of sectioning his photographic images and then re-piecing them for his final image forces the viewer to attend to the detail of the image rather than take the image as a whole. The work is a true testament of Brian's mastery of photography, composition, and use of negative space. After a career in sports medicine and health education, Brian has decided to focus on creation of artwork full-time. Brian has received no formal training in the arts. His self-education regarding art materials and conventions continues through personal interaction and experimentation with materials and direct observation of artwork in the public domain. In the last few years, Brian has presented work in over 26 venues, including his primary gallery representation in Washington, DC, Rivaga Art, 1612 "U" Street, NW, Washington, DC 20009, 202/986.2564.
