Speak Out |
It would be wonderful if 2000 were the year a cure for breast cancer was found! This is something I'd like to pass on to everyone. The notion that we could raise $16 million by buying a book of stamps is powerful! As you may (or may not) be aware, the US Postal Service recently released its new "Fund the Cure" stamp to help fund breast cancer research. The stamp was designed by Ethel Kessler of Bethesda, Maryland. It is important that we take a stand against this disease that kills and maims so many of our mothers, sisters, and friends. Instead of the normal $.33 for a stamp, this one costs $.40. The additional $.07 will go to breast cancer research. A "normal" book costs $6.60. This one is only $8.00. It takes a few minutes in line at the Post Office and means so much. If all stamps are sold, it will raise an additional $16,000,000 for this vital research. Just as important as the money is our support. What a statement it would make if the stamp out_sold the lottery this week. What a statement it would make that we care. I urge each of you to do two things, go out and purchase some of these stamps, and ask your friends to do the same. Many of us know women and their families whose lives are turned upside_down by breast cancer. It takes so little to do so much in this drive. Please help! Debi Daughterman This is a very sad and hard letter to write. At the March board meeting of the Eastern Shore AIDS Foundation (ESAF), Renee Powell from the Wicomico Health Department announced to the members that the AIDS Administration will not be renewing our grant for fiscal year 2000/2001. They felt that we were not meeting our statistics requirements for providing HIV education (our grant was to provide education, not services as many people think). After several meetings with the executive board members with much discussion concerning ESAF's operations, we voted on closing our doors. Private donations and fund raisers provide the funding to allow us to give financial assistance and food to clients. For all of these reasons, our office will be closed effective July 1, 2000. Until that time we will be available for help. To assist with finding other resources for food, financial assistance, etc., Lori has made a local community resource brochure for our clients. This can be picked up at the office. Our heartfelt thanks go out to the people who have supported ESAF over the past years. THANKS to the many volunteers who have been so helpful. Thanks to those people who didn't turn the other cheek in the face of adversity those who stood up for this organization and its clients. I know you will have questions so feel free to call the office, we will answer what we can. We are very sad and very sorry. Mary, Paul and the ESAF Board Members This year's LOVE 2000 Benefit is shaping up to be even more successful than last year's event. The Benefit Committee invites you to join us in helping our beneficiaries by becoming a Host or Sponsor. It's only through the generosity of those like you that past LOVE benefits have been able to help so many people in the Delaware area. This year your contribution will help our LOVE 2000 beneficiaries, Sussex County AIDS Committee (50%), CAMP Rehoboth (30%), The Women's Project of CAMP Rehoboth (10%) and Cape Henlopen School District (10%). The Host donation of $100 per individual name or business listed, includes one ticket to the dance party, listing on the LOVE 2000 poster, a T_shirt, as well as the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping those that need our help most. Sponsorships are also available at $300 (1 Heart), $500 (2 Hearts), and $1,000+ (3 Hearts), which include two tickets to the dance party, two T_shirts, listing on the LOVE 2000 poster and additional event promotional opportunities. LOVE 2000 will take place at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center on Saturday, July 1st from 8 p.m. _ 2 a.m. with DJ Darryl Strickland and an open bar. If you are interested in being included in printed materials for LOVE 2000 then call, mail, e_mail, or fax the Host/Sponsor form on page 24 of this issue by June 6th. We look forward to your support for LOVE 2000! Mark Aguirre Event Chair LOVE 2000 The tradition continues! I am pleased to announce that the City of Rehoboth Beach has approved fireworks, produced by Rehoboth Beach Main Street, for Sunday, July 2, 2000. Following last year's spectacular attendance of approximately 80,000 people downtown (not counting thousands of others along area beaches!), we plan to do it again! Main Street will put together a wonderful evening, capped by a spectacular fireworks displayall designed to bring residents and visitors downtown to stay, dine, shop, and enjoy. From the number of calls we've been getting from local hotels and Realtors, asking for the date of the fireworks, it's clear that it's a big draw to Rehoboth Beach. And for 2000, our plans are for an even bigger and better show than 1999. While the plans are already in place, this event is funded entirely through the generous donations of local merchants, businesses and citizens. We need your contribution to make Fireworks 2000 happen. Since RBMS is a 501(c)(3) non_profit organization, all donations are 100% tax deductible to the full extent of the law. And you will receive newspaper mentions, thanks and exposure. Our large donors ($1000 and aboveand deduct_iblewill receive photos in the local press and other valuable publicity. We're counting on you to help us make this happen. Please forward a generous donation to: Rehoboth Beach Main Street Fireworks, P.O. Box 50, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971. Feel free to call Fay Jacobs at 227_2772 if you have any questions. Whether you can donate a little or a lot, please help us fund this annual tradition. It's good for business; it's good for downtown; and it's a good time for thousands of local residents and visitors. Please help!
