Craig Gillespie Paintings on Display at Dream Cafe |
Dream Caf, 26 Baltimore Avenue, is proud to present the next in its continuing series of works by local artists with the latest paintings by Craig Gillespie. The show will open May 5 and run through June 8. Craig is associated with the new Broken Art Studio in Lewes, a collective of "outsider" artists who have no formal art training yet who love to create, and who are actually very good at it. In Craig's case, he found a box of old oil paints as a youngster and just started painting things he wanted to see. With Norman Rockwell and Salvador Dali as his guides, as these were the two art books his parents had, Craig had two very different mentoring styles to experiment with as his talent blossomed. Craig will be presenting a dozen works, all bold, colorful and largely playful. They range from the whimsical screaming kids on a ride entitled Funland, to a "steroidy" piece called The Second Day of Summer. His works are often combinations of realistic detail with impressionistic form and streaks of color and texture, the abstract with the real in a tantalizing and delightful way. "The shore is such a unique place," says Craig, "and I wanted to capture the energy and vibes from it." And this he has done with great skill and creativity. Whether a comical scene from the crowded summer Boardwalk or a very futuristic 2-piece Muscle Beach in Outer Space, Craig's work is full of life and intrigue. Here Come the Tourists is a magical reflection of looking at life from inside the fishbowl, with limes, oranges and blues predominant, and When Will the Kite Salesman Ever Learn? is a soaring dreamlike fantasy. This is Craig's first Rehoboth Beach exhibit. Dream Caf is open for breakfast and lunch. For more information, call 226-CAFE. |
