Women's Music Pioneer Margie Adam to Perform in Rehoboth Beach California singer-songwriter-activist Margie Adam, a legend in the women's movement and women's music is coming to Rehoboth Beach for one performance only, Saturday, March 9 in conjunction with the Camp Rehoboth Women's Project Conference. A veteran of performances all over the country, including Provincetown, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival in hosting this talented performer. Her work reflects a combination of two distinct stylesprogressive love songs and songs of conscience as well as pop-jazz solo piano. Both styles will be on display on Saturday night March 9, 8 p.m. at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center as Margie Adam brings her music to the beach. Tickets are $25 ($20 for attendees of that day's Women's Conference) and are on sale now by calling 227-5620. This is a great opportunity for the Rehoboth Beach women's community to show its strength and support this event. Proceeds will support the Women's Project of Camp Rehoboth and a great turnout will put Rehoboth on the map as a first-class venue for national performers. Adam is known for her unique blend of piano, voice, spirit and talk as she performs her own compositions and hosts a dynamic give-and-take with the audience. The Boston Globe says "Margie Adam is making the best music of her career. The political passions are banked deeply in her music, but so is a kind of maturity and real-life romanticism. Her melodies are graceful and inviting, her voice honest, relaxed, lovely, her piano spacious and sophisticated." Adam, who started playing the piano as a child began her performing career in 1973 at an open mic session at Kate Millet's legendary Sacramento Women's Music Festival. From there she went on to celebrate women's music and publicize the art form. Her fifty-city tour to publicize her first album culminated at the historic 1977 National Women's Conference in Houston, where she performed "We Shall Go Forth." That song is now in the archives of the Political History Division at the Smithsonian Museum. By 1980, Margie was venturing into solo piano music with her album Naked Keys and touring the country for the National Political Women's Caucus to raise money for feminist candidates. For Margie Adam, the 1980s saw a concert at Constitution Hall (on July 1st, the ratification deadline for the Equal Rights Amendment), several collaborations with other performers and a new album of love songs. Margie came off the road in 1984 for what she termed "A Radical's Sabbatical" and studied piano and voice. She began to write music again in 1990, developing a new repertoire and performing againand she continues. She performed at the 25th National Women's Music Festival and the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. In 1998 she lent her support to feminist bookstores and toured to help draw attention to the community support these businesses provide. Margie's eighth album, Avalon, has just been released and she will celebrate its feminist message with a national tour. Margie Adam will be in Rehoboth Beach for one performance only on Saturday, March 9 at the Convention Center. The concert, being produced in conjunction with the Camp Rehoboth Women's Project, will be held at 8 p.m. Call 227-5620.
