Ride for AIDS to Start in Rehoboth Beach On May 17, 2003, scores of bicycle riders from all skill levelsexpert to novicewill be departing from Rehoboth Beach as part of Ride for the Feast, a two-day, 140-mile trek to raise funds and visibility for HIV/AIDS. This first ever bike ride fundraiser for Moveable Feast will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18, 2003, from Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to Baltimore, Maryland. Participants in the journey will help to create awareness and visibility for HIV/AIDS, while also raising funds for Moveable Feast's life-saving services. "This bike ride is a first for Moveable Feast, and a first for Maryland," said Vic Basile, Moveable Feast executive director. "And anything we can do to bring much-needed visibility and funding to this worthwhile cause will help those who need it most." Moveable Feast provides meals and nutritional counseling to those in Maryland who are homebound and living with HIV/AIDS, as well as to their dependent family. In 2002 Moveable Feast delivered more than 500,000 meals to over 700 clients throughout Maryland. Proceeds from Ride for the Feast will help to eliminate a waiting list that now exists for Moveable Feast's services. The ride will depart from the Rehoboth Outlets on the morning of May 17 as it snakes its way along rural and scenic routes through Delaware and into Maryland, stopping at night on the East side of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge for an overnight stay in Kent Island. Day two's 50-mile component will end with a victory rally and closing ceremony in Baltimore City. The entire journey is fully supported for those who are riding, with complete pit stops every 15 miles, medical and maintenance support, and relief wagons. Each rider is doing his or her part by personally raising the $1,200 required to participate. And Moveable Feast has covered all expenses for the ride through corporate underwriting to ensure that every cent raised by riders goes to the services and clients of Moveable Feast, and not to expenses. Strong support has been found in the region's business community, notably from presenting sponsor Rehoboth Outlets and sponsors Choice Hotels, Comcast, and Staubach Realty. For further information on the 2003 Ride for the Feast, including sponsorship opportunities, registration details, or volunteering options, please contact Ride Administrator Joe Berg at 410-327-3420, ext. 33, or by email at jberg@mfeast.org. |
