Sharyn Warwick
Born in England, Sharyn was raised by her grandmother until she moved to Wilmington, DE in 1956. Sharyn graduated from Brandywine High School and went to Brandywine College and Del Tech. She worked at Getty in Wilmington as an accounting secretary.
Sharyn was married when she moved to this area in 1972 and didn’t work here until after her divorce. She considers herself a “Jill of all trades,” doing a little bit of everything in various local restaurants, mostly bartending and management. Sharyn also had her own DJ business,s but her favorite work was with Sussex County AIDS Council (SCAC), where she worked from 1999 to 2002, as Director of Client Services.
Today, Sharyn has her own business pet sitting and caring for the elderly. She loves what she does and also enjoys gardening, baking, and reading, “When I have time.”
When and why did you start volunteering at CAMP Rehoboth and what events and activities have you been involved with since?
I believe it was 1994 that I helped with World AIDS Day and the following year started helping with Sundance. I’ve helped ever since. I became involved with CAMP because I had just lost my brother, Shaun, to AIDS and wanted to get involved with a community (organization) that cared and lent support. I’m also involved with VOV (Volunteers on Vacation), have helped with CAMP mailings, and I am in my third year singing with the CAMP Rehoboth Chorus. The Chorus is involved with CAMP’s entry in the Rehoboth Christmas parade and I’ve helped build our float the last two years as well.
What’s your best memory volunteering here?
I have lots of wonderful memories with CAMP. The best is that I have met so many new friends that I am proud to call family.
What does CAMP Rehoboth mean to you?
Family helping each other.
First thought that comes to mind when you hear the word “Rehoboth.”
Home, where everyone is welcome!
Assuming you live or visit here year round, what’s your favorite thing to do in the off season?
Walks on the beach and spending time with friends.
If you could spend a full day with one person, who would it be? Why?
Mick Abrahms, the brother I’ve never met.
Fast forward or rewind? If you could go ahead in time or back, which would you pick and why?
Rewind. Spending a whole week in 1990 with my grandmother and brother, Shaun.
Hostess-with-the-Mostess! If you could pick any four people to invite for dinner, who would it be and why those people?
My brothers, Mick and Shaun, my grandmother, Lillian, and my faithful rotti, Harley. There is nothing like family.
Lost! If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three things would you want with you (other than food and water)?
An umbrella, sunscreen, and my bible.
Early bird or night owl? Why?
Early bird! It is so peaceful first thing in the morning. I do my best thinking and work then.
You’ve just won the lottery. What’s the first thing you’d do with your winnings?
I would give to local shelters, food closets/kitchens, my church, pay off my mortgage, and take a trip to England to visit family and friends. And meet my brother, too.
Favorite part of a wedding?
The vows.
Pet peeve(s)?
Broken promises, rude people, and bad drivers.
What was your last New Year’s Resolution and how long did it last?
I don’t make resolutions, I make goals.
What was your best job ever? Worst?
Besides what I do now, I loved working at the Sussex County AIDS Council (SCAC). The worst was managing a restaurant in Milford. Need I say more?
One favorite food? One food you’d never eat?
Lobster is my favorite, and I dislike okra, yuk!
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? Why?
Right here! It is where I feel I belong.
What are you most thankful for?
My health, and the many friends that I can call family.
I must say, Sharyn, I’m very proud to count you among my CAMP family and am quite sure many others feel the same. It’s always a pleasure working with you on various events because your positive attitude, generous and loving nature, infectious smile, and wonderful hugs are gifts to all who know you. And your cookies are amazing! On behalf of that CAMP Rehoboth family, our sincere thanks for all of your many contributions over the last 20 years. Happy Holidays!
