Speaking Freely: LGBTQ+ Expression in Schools

As LGBTQ+ rights have grown and flourished across our state and the country, we’ve seen a backlash of homophobia and transphobia in many legislative bodies. Extremist politicians across the country and our localities have been targeting a vulnerable population in schools: LGBTQ+ kids.

In spite of those politicians’ attempts to trample LGBTQ+ students’ rights, we want students, families, and educators to know that our kids have the right to express themselves. That’s why the ACLU of Delaware is launching a Know Your Rights guide on LGBTQ+ expression in schools. Join us, in partnership with ACLU-DE, on Tuesday, November 1, from 5 - 8 p.m., to celebrate Transgender Awareness Month and help launch this new resource.

At this Know Your Rights event, we’ll hear from a panel of local LGBTQ+ leaders about how this new guide will work to support and educate our community – and you can take a copy home with you to spread the word.

This event is free and open to the public. Professional credit is available for educators, social workers, and attorneys in attendance.

Tuesday, November 1, 5 - 8:30 p.m.

In-person and virtual attendance options available

Lewes Public Library: 111 Adams Ave, Lewes, DE 19958.

Virtual via Zoom

VOLUNTEER FOR THIS EVENT.

We’ll also be joined by Margaret A. Nash and Karen L. Graves, authors of Mad River, Marjorie Rowland, and the Quest for LGBTQ Teachers’ Rights. Their book examines the important case of Rowland v. Mad River School District, in which the U.S. Supreme Court dissent laid out the First and Fourteenth Amendment rights entitled to LGBTQ+ people.

Participating in this program will prepare you to assist the ongoing efforts across the state to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights in schools. You will learn about when and how legal intervention is used to defend our rights, as well as how to use this guide as an educator, parent, administration staff (including counselors), or student.

We look forward to seeing you there (or via Zoom)
