Sundance at the Movies

CAMP Rehoboth and Rehoboth Beach Film Society Cinema Art Theater invite you to join us for LGBT movie screenings the week of Sundance!  We will be screening Stage Mother on September 1st and September 2nd at 7:00 PM and the Coming Back Out Ball on September 1st and September 2nd at 4:00 PM.

The Coming Back Out Ball is a celebration, lovingly recognizing an overlooked group---the LGBTQ+ community over 60. This inspiring documentary follows older LGBTQ+ people invited to attend a ball celebrating their gender and sexual identity. Faced with the complexities of aging and isolation, these extraordinary people seize each day with determination and humor. In a time that is rapidly changing for the LGBTQ+ community around the world, viewers will witness some of the subjects in the film experiencing acceptance and love for the first time in their lives, and maybe some in the audience will be moved to remember their own stories of coming out. Sandra Hall of “The Sydney Morning Herald” calls the film, “funny, joyous and very human.” [2018, Australia, 86 minutes, Not Rated].  Watch the Movie Trailer here.

Stage Mother is a poignant comedy-drama which tells the story of parents who reject their gay son and the lengths the mother goes to after he dies to understand him better. When conservative, Texas church-choir director Maybelline (played by Jacki Weaver) inherits her recently deceased son's drag club, she surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open up and find new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club's flamboyant performers...until a surprise visit threatens to upend her new life. Also stars a wonderful cast of Lucy Liu, Adrian Grenier and Mya Taylor. [2020, US, 93 min, Rated: R].

Nikki Baughan of “Empire Magazine” says, “‘Jacki Weaver is excellent in this colorful culture-clash comedy which, despite an uneven tone, offers a welcome message about the power of love and acceptance.” Deirdre Molumby of “entertainment.ie” writes, “A love letter to the colorful world of drag that's sweet, touching and charming.”  Watch the Movie Trailer Here.
