CAMP Rehoboth Community Center has announced a town hall on Tuesday, August 16, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. addressing the hMPVX (commonly referred to as monkeypox) public health emergency. This town hall is in partnership with the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS). DHSS Secretary Molly Magarik will be discussing Delaware's response to the virus in our community, and will field questions and concerns from community members. Joining Magarik will be Dr. Marci Drees, Chief Infection Prevention Officer and hospital epidemiologist for ChrisitanaCare.

Attendance is free, but RSVP is requested to gauge attendance. Register here: https://tinyurl.com/378avdyu, or, click below.

On August 4, the hMPVX virus was officially declared a public health emergency by the Biden administration.  The virus is transmitted through direct contact with an infected person, especially contact with the lesions that appear during the rash period of the illness.   While the virus can affect anyone and is not restricted to any one group, the latest outbreak is disproportionately affecting men who have sex with men (MSM).

Molly Magarik is the Cabinet Secretary for DHSS, a role she assumed in July 2020. Previously, Magarik worked as the Deputy Cabinet Secretary since January 2017.  As the DHSS Secretary, Magarik is the second-in-command for Delaware’s second largest agency, behind only the Department of Education. Magarik’s role as DHSS Cabinet Secretary came during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and will provide more information about Delaware’s response to the hMPVX outbreak.

Addressing the medical issues surrounding hMPVX will be Dr. Marci Drees.  Dr. Drees is the Chief Infection Prevention Officer and hospital epidemiologist for ChristianaCare and is a highly sought after national expert on infectious diseases, healthcare associated infections, and vaccines.  Among her numerous affiliations, Dr. Drees chairs the Education Committee of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA), and serves as SHEA’s liaison to the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices.  She is board certified in internal medicine and infectious diseases.

CAMP Rehoboth’s core mission includes promoting health and wellness in the community, and is proud to partner with DHSS on this issue.  The town hall will be held at CAMP Rehoboth’s Elkins-Archibald Atrium at 37 Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971, unless otherwise specified.
