Two gals were dreaming about a communication link for lesbian and bisexual women in southern Delaware. As "transplants" themselves, it was difficult to connect with other women for they said "when we find out whats happening, were going to get the news circulating so others dont stumble around like we have had to do." Lisette started to draw a masthead and write articles and Denise started typing..."I am not having a bit of fun!" complained Joy. "Another cold, boring winter is ending and Ill be tied up unhappily if spring is this dull." She walked to her phone and started dialing all the gals she knew saying it was time to meet and make a plan. It was time for action! The gang met and decided to plan a brunch or cook out every month. Joy would distribute flyers and when gals showed up shed find out who enjoyed doing what for fun and get things started...Watching her hundred and third video for the winter Nancy sat her bowl of popcorn down and said aloud, "I wonder what will blow up first - me or the TV?" At work she was designing projects for gay men to build the community and prevent disease. While scheduling space for a mens group she realized she could ask for space for women, too! Epworth Church on Baltimore Avenue said she could have the lounge Wednesdays from 7:00 - 8:30. "If everybody is as stir crazy as I am, maybe we can get together and talk about it. I suppose it could end being kinda funny once its over," she half declared and half wished. She started cutting and pasting together a flyer...
Nancy saw Joys flyer. Lisette and Denise saw Nancys flyer.
Joy did her first eventa brunch last March. Nancy started her discussion group in early April. Lisette and Denise continue to shape the first newsletter "Currents" which will hit the streets in June. This little group, early supporters, and about 35 gal pals are now working together to pull the lesbian and bisexual community out and together. One activity has led to another, and the resources are growing fast!
The communication committee (which includes the newsletter) public service announcement design, reading, writing and drawing groups are eager for you to join up. Call Lisette at 227-0539. The support service committee welcomes participation and volunteers at the weekly discussion group: counseling referrals; health fair planning; lesbian health policy advocacy and research; lesbians in business (LIB!) network; special topic classes; fundraising. Call Nancy at 226-9695. And for a good time...join the fun with the social planning committee which includes movie nights, monthly parties, quarterly dances, sports team organization, nature trips, beach fun, and all kinds of spin off clubs based on your interests. Call Joy at 947-1796.
Spring is here, summer is just around the wave and the gals aint bored no more! Well be looking for you. Surfs up!
