SAFE-Tea Dances Set for Summer Sundays |
by Bill Sievert |
"We can dance if we want to... Theres a place theyll never find. And we can act like we come from out of this world, Leave the real one far behind, And we can dance." Lyrics excerpted from "The Safety Dance" It wont be difficult to find this summers Sunday afternoon SAFE-Tea Dances. They will be a highlight of the new seasons Project CAMPsafe, an HIV outreach campaign sponsored by CAMP Rehoboth. The three monthly teas will all take place on the deck and in the disco of Cloud 9, which has generously offered to co-host the events. The name for the dances was inspired by the title of the memorable 1980s pop song by the group Men Without Hats, but there is nothing dated about the sounds youll be hearing this summer. Cloud 9 has lined up a top-notch visiting disc jockey for each of the SAFE-Tea Dances, including: Keana on June 20; Robbie Leslie, July 25, and Brian Norwood, August 16. All three teas will be from 5 to 8 p.m. at Cloud 9 Restaurant, 234 Rehoboth Avenue. There is no cover and everyone is invited to attend. CAMPsafe will be distributing condoms, safe sex information and door prizes at each event. We also hope to have members of our new CAMPsafe Lifeguard brigade make special guest appearances. (Look for more on our Lifeguards in the next issue of LETTERS.) The primary goal of Project CAMPsafe, which is supported by the State of Delawares Department of Health and Human Services, is to provide information on and encourage safe sexual behavior to gay and bisexual males who live in and visit Southern Delaware. (Women also are cordially invited to the SAFE-Tea Dances.) In our next CAMPsafe column, we will reveal more plans for the 1999 CAMPsafe program, including some very special safe-sex workshops. They will be part of an autumn weekend mens retreat we are putting together in association with The Renegade Resort and Washingtons Whitman-Walker Clinic. This is going to be much more of an events oriented year, more interactive, than was last years project. Also in our next column, watch for a sneak peek at our new CAMPsafe Lifeguards campaign. Now, for a brief TRIVIA QUIZ: In what year was the song "Safety Dance" released? What was the name of the album on which the song appeared? How many Men Without Hats were there? From what country did the members of the band hail? Around what tall erectile unit did the band dance in the video for "Safety Dance"? (Come on, think of good, clean springtime fun.) The first five readers to answer all five questions correctly will receive a package of our 1999 promotional goodies, including a deck of CAMPsafe playing cards, a CAMPsafe magnet, a temporary tattoo and a do-not-disturb door signplus a CAMPsafe-ty wrapped condom. Send your answers before April 25th to: CAMPsafe Trivia, c/o CAMP Rehoboth, 39 Baltimore Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971; by fax: 302-227-5604, or by e-mail: campsafe@camprehoboth.com. (Answers cannot be accepted over the phone, so please do not call.) The answers and winners names will be in the May 7 issue of LETTERS. But dont worry. Even if you are not successful with the trivia quiz, youll have plenty of other opportunities to pick up complimentary CAMPsafe goodies this summer, including at the "SAFE-Tea Dances." (Hats are optional.) Meanwhile, Have fun! Play Smart! CAMPsafe. |
