Eating OUT: Plumb Loco |
by Barry Becker |
PLUMB LOCO (10 N. First St.) was recently named by Curve magazine as one of the best lesbian restaurants in the country, so what better place to check out in town? With its famous (and changing) menu, colorful painted tables and decor, its huge skylight, the jukebox, karaoke and other entertainment, Plumb Loco is often a major destination in town. I've been through many plates of nachos at Plumb Loco, and could make a meal of those wonderful chips and the best salsa, so I was looking forward to expanding my horizons a little with the menu. I of course also had to try the new Mango Margaritas I've been hearing so much about, made with fresh mango, and now I know why I've been hearing so much about them. Yum! Maria and Dan kept a watchful eye on us all night, and kept us very happy by serving sample portions of the menu. After devouring the best chips and salsa, we opened with the Black Bean Chile, a wonderful blend of black beans, corn and chiles that you could easily make a meal around. The Bayskins arrived next, perfectly crunchy baked potato skins piled with blue crab meat and covered with melted cheese, dusted with old bay to give it a little kick, and with sour cream on the side. I could have easily eaten many more of these, but I knew there was more coming from the kitchen, so I'll have to go back. We then had a sample of three types of chicken, which are served with Mexican rice and greens with a ginger vinaigrette. The Birria was coated with chile and spicy herbs, and had a great flavor to it, and not too hot. The special of the day was a rosemary coated grilled chicken, and as rosemary is one of my favorite things on the planet, it was just delicious with the fresh herb all over it. The Cancun was also dusted with spicy chile, but the addition of cinnamon gave it a unique twist that was fabulous. Next were the crab rollups, blue crab wrapped in a flour tortilla then topped with melted cheese and an orange Grand Marnier spiked sauce over it that gave it that extra edge of wonderfulness. Again, I definitely have to go back for more of these. Next we sampled the Chimichangas, light and crunchy deep fried burritos, one stuffed with chicken, onions, tomato and more, the other with seasoned ground beef. Both were topped with grated cheese, and served with Plumb Loco's famous Red (slightly spicy) and Green (Hot) sauce, which were great complements to the food. We were starting to slow down a little bit, but still had enough room for a new fish taco, which is two soft tacos wrapped around a battered chunk of white fish and rolled with cabbage, cheese and white sauce. Dan suggested putting salsa in it as well, and he was right, the combination of flavors and textures was divine (though it was certainly great on its own, as well). Well, we were finally ready to throw in the towel, so we headed for dessert. The Mocha Flan is a coffee and chocolate custard with whipped cream, a light and cool and perfect ending to a spicy meal. There are of course many other items on the menu, from salads to fajitas, and even "things for gringos," so make sure to check out why Plumb Loco is getting such national attention. Plumb Loco, 10 North First Street, is open daily from 5:00 p.m. until 1:00 a.m. for the best in Mexican food, Margaritas and entertainment. |
