Films, Funds and Fun on Tap for Film Fest Fans |
As the second annual Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival is now 3 months away (November 10-14), the behind-the- scenes work is moving into a fever pitch. "Just about everything related to the festival needs to be completed in the next 6 weeks, as we go to press with the program by late September," says Festival Director Barry Becker. "From what we're seeing so far, it's going to be another great year for independent cinema, and we have a few surprises in store that we hope will be big hits of the festival."
Guest Curators The program this year will also benefit from 2 Guest Curators who will bring their own unique perspective and knowledge of films to Rehoboth. Paul Lee, born in Hong Kong and now living in Toronto, is a film director, writer and/or producer of 17 short films. He has also curated programs at festivals around the globe, including Madrid, Bangladesh, Bangkok, Kyoto and Tokyo, in addition to many sites in Canada. "Paul brings such depth and passion to his work," says Becker, "and I am honored and humbled that he is working with us. He has put together several programs of short films that I know will challenge us all." Kelly Gordon, Film Curator at the Smithsonian Institution's Hirshhorn Museum for over a decade, will also lend a hand with her own brand of film programming. "Kelly has attended festivals from Jerusalem to Rotterdam for years and years, and her grasp of cutting-edge independent film as a programmer cannot be rivaled," says Becker. "Her programs are frequently standing-room only, and I expect the same for what she will put together for us in November." Great Parties To help support the growth of the festival are a series of fabulous fund raising events which will be held September 24, October 2, and October 10. As the box office receipts only cover a portion of the cost of producing the festival, events such as these are crucial to the festival's growth. Each event will feature live entertainment and catering by many of the area's best restaurants. "Board member Jill Roberts has gone overboard in lining up the restaurants, and these intimate parties at local homes will be the 'must-attend' events of the season," says Becker. "To assure that you will be invited, make sure you are on the Film Society mailing list by filling out the coupon on page 36 and sending it back to us right away. Trust me, you will not want to miss these events." Business Alert Over 400 area businesses were mailed information on how they may be involved in the festival, from advertising in the program to sponsoring a film. Volunteers are now making as many personal visits as possible with business leaders, but if you have not received your packet, or wish to advertise in the program, please call the Festival office at 645.9095. The deadline for ad space is August 30. |
