How did they do it? On the night of June 17th, a fire struck NASSAU GALLERY (176 Rehoboth Ave.), and, like many in town, I thought they would be closed for weeks just as we headed into the season. But no! The store re-opened for business on the July 4th weekend. Owner Brooks Long tells me that due to the extensive damage, the whole first floor had to be gutted, and the retail space upstairs was re-done. Friends and construction crew worked around the clock to get this fabulous shop ready. The Gallery specializes in fine art, original oils, furniture and custom framing. Their second Opening Party of the season is this weekend. Welcome back! Im told I dont have much room in this issue, and I always seem to run out of time anyhow, so this article will be more abbreviated than usual. I figured we would go on a stroll down Rehoboth Avenue, since were there already. SCANDINAVIAN OCCASION (125 Rehoboth Ave.) offers wonderful handmade Scandinavian artworks and more. They have a gorgeous collection of colorful Swedish crystal and glasswork, including painted stemware. Theres Royal Copenhagen porcelain, a room full of delicate European lace in the back, even a Christmas corner of ornaments and decorative pieces. But, being a candle addict, the part of the store I love most is the fabulous collection of candles and candle holders, probably one of the most extensive in town. There are amazingly scented aromatherapy candles, handmade candles, and candle holders of all sorts of shapes and sizes. Check out the wonderful candle holder candelabras. At 127 Rehoboth Avenue is L.A. CONNECTION, with probably the hugest watch collection in the area. But this store is so much more than dozens and dozens and dozens of cool watches in every style and price range imaginable. There are also some really hip and cool clothes in here for men and women, as well as great gifts and things for your home that you simply must have! SOUTH MOON UNDER (120 Rehoboth Ave.) also carries a great line up of creative gifts, books, home ware and really cool stuff in their Habitat section. The rest of this spacious store offers great clothing lines for men and women, as well as jewelry and other items. If you feel like being artistic, check out CREATABLE CRAFTS (146 Rehoboth Ave.) where you can explore your artistic side by creating a masterpiece of pottery. You select from the big collection of pieces available and put on your own glazes and designs. Your work will be fired overnight, and you can pick it up the next day. Its a great rainy day venture! At the full-service REHOBOTH PHARMACY (107 Rehoboth Ave.) you can find, well, all the kinds of stuff you find in a pharmacy, plus lots of great things for the beach. Of course my favorite feature is the piece of candy given with every prescription refill. Owner and pharmacist Kathy McGuinness is also the past-President of the Board of Main Street, which just put on the best fireworks display ever in Rehoboth. Great job Kathy and gang! Whos in the next issue? I dont have a clue yet. Barry Becker, a regular contributor to Letters, is Director of the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. |
