LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Speak Out |
Let me tell you about my love affair with Taste of Heaven! (Reviewed in Letters, May 21, 1999 issue.) My daughter, Paige Berdini and I would go to lunch there to see how our friend Bill Raney was doing in his tiny deli and have an absolutely fabulous lunch. We both adored the pate. It was truly the best either of us had ever had, complimented by what seemed like pounds of capers, cornichorns, and crisp chewy fresh French bread. Oh, we sometimes ran to Lewes to bring pate back "for a little snack" on Paiges day off. Ho!
I was in Baltimores G.B.M.C. hospital years ago for chemo and even a bagel was disgusting. Into my room in a burst of sunshine and all smiles, of course, came Paige with a little snack ofyou guessed itpate! Complete with mustards, capers to die for, bread, and cheeses. The eyes crossed with my smile of gratitude. Eventually, we graduated to Baltimores great Donnas roasted vegetables. I never see or hear pate without thinking of our friend Bill Raney and Paige. Now Bill and his wonderful "huggy" familyDad and sistershave moved down the street a bit to their bigger restaurant. A great crowd of us had a fantastic Easter brunch in the room upstairsfun, funny great waiter kept us laughing...hard to be there without Miss P. She would have loved it, and did. A few more special lunches there with Drexel, my son Jay and husband Edd, where Bill takes one look at me as I enter, disappears to the kitchen, and magically produces a huge package of pate for me to take home. I do love Atlanta and my new husband, but I miss you terribly, Bill, and I miss my Paige "terribler!" Thank you, thank you, Barry, for your beautifully written review. I salivated at all of it. Thank you, thank you Steve and Murray for such a great issue, as always, and for letting me tell my story of "Missy." Sue Phillips Shotts Atlanta, Georgia As a member of the Committee that has put on the LOVE benefit since its inception five years ago, I would like to take the opportunity to thank some people who made this years event possible. This was a difficult year for LOVE, since the people who had done the planning in the past were not able to spend the time to do so this year. At the last moment, Mark Aguirre stepped in and literally saved the day. In a short number of weeks he managed to put this years event together. I know he couldnt have done it without the help of Rob Dick, manager of the Blue Moon. Rob often doesnt get the thanks for all that he does for our community, since he usually does things quietly and lets others take the kudos. Rob is a good and valued friend for many years and I think that its about time that he gets some of the recognition directly for all his hard work. LOVE99 would have been very difficult to produce without him. We also owe a debt of gratitude to Jim DOrta and his partner Dale Curtis for stepping in and hosting the Sponsors Party at their beautiful home. LOVE is an event that takes many hands to put together. The usual crew was there as always: Steve and Murray, Chris, Tony, Tom. Like Barbra, one only needs first names to recognize them. I think that with this years LOVE event we have solidified the bookends for our summer efforts to raise money for SCAC and CAMP Rehoboth. LOVE opens the season on the fourth of July and SUNDANCE celebrates its end over the Labor Day weekend. Peter D. Rosenstein This is just a quick letter to say "thank you!" to all of the folks who helped make our July 4th celebration and fireworks a success. We have dozens and dozens of volunteers to thank, as well as the hundreds of people who made generous donations to the Fireworks Fund. This really was a community effort, with donations coming not only from our local businesses, but a huge number of individual homeowners and Rehoboth Beach visitors. Thank you all! And, thanks too, to Peter Butcavage, graphic design assistant for Letters for designing his wonderful "I Helped Make the Fireworks a Blast!" logo for our T-shirts. And thanks to CAMP Rehoboth for permitting Peter to donate his time to us! This was the first year Main Street sold event T-shirts and they went like hotcakes (and it was hot!!!). We couldnt have sold as many as we did without the super sales efforts of volunteers Don Voth, Patricia Bostick and her son Will, Bonnie Quesenberry and Eric Peterson. Thanks also to Letters for the publicity and donation of thousands of dollars of ad space for Main Street and July 4th. And, while wed love to thank each and every donor in this letter (after all, we couldnt have done it without you!), at least let me give special mention to our major sponsors, like Grotto Pizza, Nicola Pizza, Browseabout, Bad Hair Day, Atlantic Sands Hotel, Dolles/Ibachs Candy, Lingo Realtors, Prudential Gallo Realty, Rebecca Darlington, Debbie Angus, Henlopen Hotel, Rehoboth Beach Pharmacy, Parsell Funeral Homes, Bayside Builders, David Spilman, Joseph B. Hill and Thrashers Fries. Again, thanks to all our generous donors, energetic volunteers, our local police, fire and city officials, the Mayor and Commissioners, and everyone else who pitched in to help Rehoboth Beach Main Street bring the fireworks to downtown Rehoboth. You all helped make it a blast! Fay Jacobs and the Rehoboth Beach Main Street 1999 Fireworks Committee ACTION ALERT It is vitally important that we let our voices be heard in opposition to proposed changes to the Department of Health regulations concerning names reporting of persons who are HIV positive. After months of extensive meetings concerning the pros and cons of names reporting, the policy committee of the Delaware HIV Consortium recommended and the board of the Consortium agreed to oppose mandatory names reporting. The board expressed concern that there would be a negative impact on testing due to concerns with anonymity. They also believe that a properly designed system of unique identifiers would provide adequate information to the state with regard to incidences of HIV infection. We are asking your help in derailing this policy change before it is too late. Please copy the following and send it to Governor Tom Carper. Help put the brakes on Delawares plans to implement mandatory HIV+ names reporting. Governor Thomas Carper Carvel State Office Bldg. 820 N. French Street Wilmington, DE 19801 Dear Governor Carper: I oppose the Delaware Division of Public Healths proposed rule to implement a Mandatory Names Reporting system for HIV positive individuals, as well as the proposed changes in partner notification rules, and I request that you suspend the public hearing scheduled for July 29, 1999. Instead of mandatory names reporting, the State of Delaware should implement a Unique Identifier (UI) program to track HIV infected individuals. A Unique Identifier system will provide for adequate tracking of HIV cases and insure the privacy rights of individuals living with HIV/AIDS. Sincerely, Signature Name Address City State Zip Or fax the governor at 302-577-3118. |
