For the three years I have now lived in Rehoboth, I have worked in the heart of downtown and spent most of my time there. The highway was something to be avoided at least and feared at most due to the heavy traffic and maniacal drivers who think it is somehow appropriate to veer across 3 lanes of traffic without looking because they suddenly saw something of interest. But recently I changed jobs, and unfortunately work location, so I now find myself driving up and down Route One all day long. I cant say Im crazy about it, but it has given me a new perspective on living here, and Ive found some interesting life along Highway One. This article is dedicated to some of the fabulous businesses who call the Highway home. If you are looking for some great home furnishings and furniture, check out THE MILL OUTLET (#1 Lighthouse Plaza, north of K-Mart), where youll find a massive collection of fabulous sheets, bedroom ensembles, towels, rugs, linens, and more for your bath and bedroom. At JUST LOOKING (4147 Hwy. One, next to Rehoboth Video) youll find rooms chock full of antiques and near-antiques of every size and function, something for every room and every taste. There are chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, furniture galore, and lots of things youll find you just cant live without. Cool stuff! You can spend hours browsing in here, and its OK to say just looking." The FURNITURE GALLERY (1135 Hwy. One) specializes in unfinished furniture for every room of your house. They have many paints and stains and all the things youll need to finish your furniture. They also have custom finished and hand painted items for sale. You can even have it delivered to NY, NJ, PA, DC, VA and MD. If its wicker youre after, you simply must check out the WICKER VILLAGE (4391 Hwy. One) which has so much wicker and so many items, they actually have several buildings to hold it all. At the ORECK Floor Care Center (4307 Hwy. One) youll find really cool vacuum cleaners as well as great floor cleaning products such as No Return, which takes care of those little pet "accidents." They also sell and rent the Oreck orbiter, which dry cleans carpets, marble, woodjust about anything you walk on. There are a number of restaurants along the highway to serve many tastes. The LAMP POST (at the Rt. 24 intersection) serves an extensive menu of lite fare and pastas, steaks, ribs, and chicken, and of course, their specialty, a huge selection of seafood in many combinations and styles. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here 7 days a week, and there are weekly specials for each of these meals as well. At the CRAB BARN (4345 Hwy. One) youll find all-you-can-eat shrimp and crabs, in addition to a full seafood menu, while over at COCOS DINER (4440 Hwy. One), which opened earlier this year, youll find a full menu (take out available) and bar, and on Friday and Saturday, Cocos is opened 24 hours! In addition to restaurants, the Highways home to REHOBOTH SEAFOOD (4131 Hwy. One ) which specializes in an amazingly wide selection of fresh seafood, and other meats. At ITS A WONDERFUL LOAF (4307 Hwy. One) youll find showcases full of delicious homemade bread in every conceivable flavor, with daily specials, as well as desserts and yummy sweets. Its a must stop if youre on the highway. If you want to get physical and have a good workout, be sure to check out either THE FIRM FITNESS CENTER (#6 Camelot Shopping Center) or, further south, GOLDS GYM (3712 Hwy. One) At LEISURE FITNESS (3 Lighthouse Plaza), next to the new Giant Food, you can build your own home gym, choosing from the sleekest of treadmills and exercise bikes, to barbells and stairmasters and weights and equipment of all sorts. Make sure to check out the Reebok ridge rocker, a very Star Wars-looking piece of training equipment, and the Precor Stretch Trainer, which are both just too cool. Need a new car? At CP DIVER (1215 Hwy. One, Lewes) John Barbarulo can help you find a great new GMC, Chevy, Oldsmobile, Buick or Pontiac. If its a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury youre after, check out BOULEVARD (1583 Hwy. One, Lewes). The Highway has it all. Drive carefully, and enjoy! Barry Becker is Director of the Rehoboth Beach Independent Film Festival. |
