HTP Puts on the Ritz for Evening with Cole Porter |
The Rehoboth Beach Country Club will be transformed into the Hotel Ritz in Paris during the 1920s when Henlopen Theater Project presents Putting on the Ritz, on Friday, May 21. It will be an evening of cocktails, decadent hors d oeuvres and the new show Porter in Paris starring singer, director, arranger Judy Brown and a cast of three New York stars. A reception at 6:30 p.m. will feature food and cocktails that were the favorites of the song writer and his friends served at the Hotel Ritz. The 8:00 p.m. show will be preceded by a Silent Auction featuring a collection of 1920s nostalgia and donations from members of HTPs Distinguished Artist Advisory Board and area businesses.
"We are very excited to have gotten the Cole Porter show for this benefit because its a great theatrical evening and everyone will have a wonderful time," said Sam Profeta of Rehoboth, who along with Christine Strauss chairs the benefit. The show will feature familiar Cole Porter songs and many recently discovered unpublished pieces. Ms. Brown, who has sole rights to these pieces, is featured in the show and also created the concept and arranged the music. She chose the Ritz Hotel as the setting because it was a favorite haunt of the well-known song writer. "During the 1920s Porter took a suite at the Ritz and for the rest of his life had a love affair with Paris," said Ms. Brown. "The City of Lights became an inspiration for Porters beautiful melodies and witty lyrics." Actor Lisa Pelikan has enlisted her friends and fellow actors on HTPs Distinguished Artists Board to donate items for the auction, according to Sandra L. Ware, chairman of the Silent Auction. Many businesses and individuals have also donated items. The committee is welcoming donations such as theater and symphony tickets, period jewelry, theater posters, and 1920s memorabilia. Black tie and/or period costume is optional. For tickets and more information call the Henlopen Theater Project office at 302-226-4103. |
