After the holidays and spending a few weeks on the go visiting family and friends, it felt great to come home to Rehoboth Beachuntil the snow that is. The storm hit during deadline, which made it quite difficult picking up ad copy with the messy road conditions. Most people had problems getting to work, but John Barbarulo of C.P. Diver just put his vehicle into 4 wheel drive and climbed right over it. And to think I was just in Northern California with clear skies and temperatures in the mid 70's. Speaking of vacation, one adventure I experienced during my trip to the West Coast was quite unique. While staying in Santa Cruz, some friends and I decided to take a road trip to San Jose, through Napa Valley, and to San Francisco. The scenery along the coast was breathtaking. On the way, we took a wrong turn and accidentally drove through a small town called Castroville, located on the Monterey Peninsula. At first, we thought we were entering something out of the Twilight Zone, because of the huge artichoke sitting at the city's entrance. As we continued, we noticed places like: The Artichoke Inn, Artichoke Restaurant and Lounge, Artichoke Pacific Bank, Artichoke Department of Human Resources, etc. Bewildered, but starving, I suggested we stop and eat at the Artichoke Caf. Well, talk about Forrest Gump and Bubba's shrimp. This place served artichokes deep fried, baked, stuffed, broiled, marinated, over pasta, in soup, with salad, and even as a dessert. We later found out that Castroville is the artichoke capitol of the world and holds an annual Festival and Farmers Convention each May. The festivities include a cooking contest, entertainment, a parade, and of course... The crowning of Miss Artichoke. Watch out Miss Delaware!!! On the way out of town I couldn't resist stopping at The Artichoke Street Market to buy a dozen of my favorite green vegetable. Being brought up in an Italian family, artichokes were always one of the 50 items served at each meal. On the Rehoboth scene and what's happening... The season starts off with Valentine's and President's weekends back to back. Check our ads and map listing to find that perfect restaurant and favorite flower shop to spoil your honey. If you want to add a special surprise, The Nautical Sounds Barbershop Chorus is offering a gift package which includes a live quartet singing 2 songs, a long stem rose, and a personalized card from you. They will appear just about anywhere from your home or office, to even your restaurant destination for only $30. Call 302-644-1321 to make a reservation for February 12, 13, or 14 to make sure your message is delivered. Happy birthday to Chad Ackland, bartender at Cloud 9, who celebrated his 25th birthday on Saturday, January 29. Lee Cook was one of many who joined in the celebration. The Blue Moon reopens for their 20th year, on Thursday, February 10, serving dinner seven days a week. At The Renegade, Fantasia was looking fabulous as ever, and got a big hug from cutie Brian Friend while greeting guests at the door. It's nice to see all the familiar faces slowly returning into town from their winter getaways. The Miss Sweetheart 2000 Pageant will be held at the Renegade on Friday, February 11 at 9 p.m. sharp. The show will feature La Contress Farrington (Miss Rehoboth 2000), Essence (Miss Southern Bell 2000), Leighanne Richards (Miss Renegade 1999), Dominique Taylor (Miss Rehoboth 1999), Monique La More (Miss Sweetheart 1999), and friends. Pageant applications are available at the Renegade bar. The Renegade is hosting another "AOL Spring Fling Party" on Friday, March 10, at 10 p.m. with a buffet, door prizes, drink specials and more. Don't miss the chance to meet your online friendsand finally put a face to the nameand then dance to the sounds of DJ Jeff Harrison. Have fun and I'll see you around town.
