LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Speak Out |
For the last several years, my business partner, Jean-Luc Charpentier, and I have owned and operated Celsius, a restaurant on Wilmington Avenue. Things have not been easy, but we want to build our business here and soon felt a part of the community. Whenever there is a function that calls for volunteers, we are the first to respond. We always contribute to the opening of Jazz weekend, SUNDANCE, P.L.Active, a dessert for a political event. In other words, we believe in Rehoboth. Friday, July 15, the City of Rehoboth let us down. It was our annual Bastille Day celebration, and we had prepared for at least 100 guests. Because of the poor conditions of the storm drains in Rehoboth, specifically on Wilmington Ave., the rain flooded not only the streets but our entire restaurant. We had to close our doors and turn away customers for several hours. We lost thousands of dollars in business, and incurred several thousand dollars worth of permanent damage to the interior, not to mention employee's lost wages. OthersSpa by the Sea, Espuma, and Subwayhad the same problem. The poor drainage problem on Wilmington Ave. and in Rehoboth Beach was brought to the city's attention on numerous occasions. Obviously, they chose to ignore these warnings and we must pay that price. May I suggest draining the system of all the SAND or maybe a NEW DRAINAGE SYSTEM may be the answer? Several members of the community told us this has been "happening for years" at this location. I wish this had been disclosed to us prior to our opening at this location. Fortunately, our fine staff and numerous friends came to our assistance and we are open for business, with freshly shampooed rugs. Others may not be so lucky. Rehoboth needs to take care of its own, then we can better serve the community and the tourists who support our resort! Mary-Jane Stanton, Celsius Chef/Owner Thank you for your support of our Third Annual Golf and Tennis Classic on May 8, 2000. We had a high level of sponsorship and participation at this year's Tournament. The event netted nearly $26,000, which will be used to provide essential support for statewide HIV early intervention, treatment information, and housing programs. I think we got the best weather of the month, even though it was a little warm! The event is a wonderful way to bring together a variety of people and organizations to support services for those living with HIV in Delaware. We hope we will see you at the 4th Annual Tournament next year! On behalf of the Consortium I thank you again for your generous support, and I look forward to working with you in the future. Sue Weimer, Executive Director Delaware HIV Consortium Enclosed is a picture from our club's trip to Disney World for Gay Day 2000. We were excited to be able to have 16 members of our club attend such a great event and fun sharing with others about gay life here in Rehoboth Beach. We all wore red T-shirts on Saturday, with both our club and community pride printed on them. A lot of people were glad to see that we were there to show our support of issues currently facing gay communities all over the world. We are really excited about the work our club is doing to help raise funds for CAMP Rehoboth and for the gay community. Thanks for all your support. Bamm Fountain, President Eastern Shore Bears I regret to inform that Paul Ludeman died, Thursday, July 13, at the hospital in his hometown of Tracy, Minnesota. Paul was 51 years old. The cause of death was primarily due to complications of liver cancer. Paul very recently (about 10 days or so before he died) returned to Tracy to be with his family after his doctor advised he only had a few months to live. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to: Sander and Mary Lou Ludeman, 1608 310th Avenue, Tracy MN 56175. There will be a celebration of Paul's life in Washington, DC. Paul's friend Jim Terwilliger said that it would probably be in early September at his home. Jim also suggested that in lieu of sending flowers, donations can be made to organizations such as the American Liver Foundation or a local hospice. Needless to say, Paul was one of those people that when you met him, you never forgot him. Smile when you remember him and think of the joy he brought to your life.
