Ninth Maryland Swim for Life Set for July 8 |
On July 8, more than 100 open water swimmers and community volunteers will arrive in Chestertown, MD, for the 9th Annual Maryland Swim for Life (SFL). Rolph's Wharf Marina will host the 1-,2-,3-,and 4-mile swims on the Chester River to benefit people affected by HIV and AIDS. The Compleat Bookseller and Play It Again Sam in Chestertown are also exhibiting posters for SFL created by Kent School students. Swimmers and volunteers who register with a minimum of $100 in pledges will begin the day with a light breakfast at 7 a.m. An opening ceremony at 8:30 will include an invocation by Rev. Dale Brown of the Chester Valley Ministers Association. At 8:45 a.m. the swimmers will dive into 1-,2-,3-, or 4-mile waves that begin and end at Rolph's Wharf. When all swimmers have returned to shore, SFL will provide entertainment, a picnic, and prizes for the swimmers. This year's event will feature music by Bittersweet. Participants will also receive a T-shirt featuring artwork by students from Kent School. Each year, swimmers raise $12-15,000 to be donated to community organizations that provide services for people affected by HIV/AIDS throughout the state. Proceeds from this year's event will be shared among Chester Valley Ministers Association; Kent and Queen Anne's County AIDS Foundation; Maryland Community Kitchen; Maryland's AIDS Legislative Committee; the People with AIDS/HIV Coalition of Baltimore, Inc., Quality of Life Retreats; and Sisters Together and Reaching (STAR). The Chester River Association is also to receive a donation for their work to protect the environment.
