LETTERS From CAMP Rehoboth |
Speak Out |
Rehoboth is a biblical name and as you are involved in activities that violate the word of God please change your name! As a follower of Jesus Christ and student of the Bible I was drawn to your name on the internet. Imagine my disgust when I found out your mission. Thank you. Larry Garza Editor's response: First of all, we had no part in choosing the name Rehoboth. That was done a little over 100 years ago by the town's founders, a group of Methodist clergy and lay persons. So it is really not an option for us to change the name. You are correct, however, in your statement that the name is found in the Bible. It is the name given by Abraham to the site of one of the wells dug by his family. It was, it seems, the first well they were able to dig where no troubles ensued. They were able to enjoy the cool water and reap the benefis of the wonderful live giving power of water. He chose the name Rehoboth which means wide place or wideopen space. Abraham knew that his Rehoboth was a place of refuge that had room for all. Those of us in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware are fortunate to live in a community that long ago determined that it, too, would be a place where there is room for all. Our town celebrates the diversity of God's creation. We celebrate in the knowledge that we are all children of God. I am sorry that you find disgust in persons who may be different from you but are children of God nonetheless. I pray you come to understand what it truly means to love one another. Please pray for me as well. Sincerely, Steve Elkins Thank you so much, Kathy, for your part in sending me my first issue of Letters. It was a gift from a great friend. He and his partner are both wonderful! I hope you'll get an opportunity to meet them both in person. Fay's Rehoboth Journal is fabulous. I also think Murray Archibald seems so fine a person, as well as Steve Elkins. The entire bunch is greatand the way you let recipients know of a gift subscription is truly fantastic! I am 88 years old. Recently suffered a stroke. I can never, ever, put in writing how much I appreciate CAMP Rehoboth. All of you are great! Venita Hinkle Many thanks for the donation of academic and professional books sent to you by publishers for possible review in Letters from CAMP Rehoboth, which you gave to GALA (the Gay and Lesbian Association at Salisbury State University), for the Blackwell Library. Speaking as an academic who teaches a course in LGBTQ literature, I am extremely grateful to you for your willingness to send these books our way. The SSU library is very thin in LGBTQ holdings and your contributions to the collection will enhance it considerably. I have spoken with Nathan about a logo for the bookplate. We will work quickly to get this bookplate produced and into the books and into the library acquisitions process. Many thanks again, Steve. May this happy exchange of books continue into the future. Polly Stewart I am currently under contract with Columbia University Press to write a book which is to be titled The Loss of a Partner: Issues of Marriage, Cohabitation and Sexual Orientation. I am interested in locating individuals who have lost a partner through death and who are of varying ages and backgrounds. As the title suggests, I am also interested in locating individuals who have been married as well as those who have lived together in either a heterosexual or homosexual relationship. If you are interested in sharing your story (or know someone who might be), so that others who are experiencing similar situations could be supported by reading about your experiences, please contact Carolyn Walters at 610-876-9582 at your earliest convenience. If your story (or someone's you suggest) is selected for inclusion in the book I will preserve all confidentiality by changing names, occupations and any other identifying information. Prior to including your story in the book I will give it to you for review and modification. Thank you so much for your interest in this project. Carolyn A. Walter, Ph.D., LSW, Associate Professor, Center for Social Work Education, Widener University Before I begin, I would like to say thank you to all who supported our club during our first year. We have done so much and have grown to 50 plus members in just one year. Each year we try to create a more fun and comfortable community for all of us. Last year we were able to raise over $1500.00 for Sundance, and organized several food drives. By being able to do this, we had several fundraisers. Again we are approaching the time of year to start asking help from you, our friends. We are starting the year with a great event: Basket Auction 2000. This event was able to help us raise a lot of money for the community. The event is April 22 at 9:00 p.m. at the Double L Bar in Rehoboth Beach. We will feature creative baskets to be auctioned. We will also be having several drawings for prizes and cash. If you are able to contribute a donation, or an item for auction, please contact Bamm Fountain at 302-541-0798 or e-mail at eshorbears@aol.com. Thank you for your help in this matter.
