P.L.Active Ceases Operations in Delaware After nearly 4 years of providing non-profit, HIV/AIDS services at the beaches in Sussex County, Delaware, PLActive, Inc. closed its Lewes office and ceased operations in Delaware on December 31, 2000. PLActive's branch office was opened in 1996 by Sean C. Venable and initially offered a support group for Persons Living with AIDS, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes. Subsequently, the organization provided Buddy Services, a light food program called "Chicken Soup," a financial assistance program for over-the-counter drugs, supplies, equipment, information, and referrals. Venable stated that PLActive's client services will be assumed by the successor organization, "Positive Light," which is under the umbrella of AIDS Delaware. The agency's office in Rehoboth is located at 706 Rehoboth Avenue Extended. Venable also emphasized that PLActive's policy which states that "funds raised in Delaware be spent on client programs in Delaware" remains in effect. It is expected that these funds will be transferred to AIDS Delaware early in 2001. Christian de la Huerta Speaks at MCC, Feb. 3 New Realities and Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) will host Christian de la Huerta, best-selling author of the award winning book, Coming Out Spiritually: The Next Step, Saturday, February 3, at 7 p.m. at Ocean Wave Lodge (MCC's Worship Center), 521 Holland Glade Road, Rehoboth. Following Mr. de la Huerta's lecture on Coming Out Spiritually, there will be a special reception to meet the author and a book signing. Admission is $15 at the door on a first come, first served basis. Chosen by Publishers' Weekly as one of the ten best religious books of 1999, and nominated for a Lambda Literary Award, Coming Out Spiritually has been a galvanizing force for the gay/lesbian/ bisexual/transgendered (GLBT) community across the nation and throughout the world as it seeks to integrate sexuality and spirituality. Described by a reviewer as "Jerry Falwell's worst nightmare," this book shows its readers how to look deep inside, to reach higher than ever before, and to step more fully into their rightful selves without apology or fear. De la Huerta, the Founder and Executive Director of Q-Spirit (an international network of gays and lesbians in spirituality) documents the fact that in most of the indigenous cultures of the world GLBT people were the spiritual leaders and healers of the tribe and encourages spiritual seekers among today's GLBT community to reclaim their sacred heritage. In doing so, he describes ten spiritual roles or archetypes, such as shaman, healer, creator of beauty, and mediator, with which his audience can re-connect in order to empower their own spiritual gifts. New Realities is a spiritually-based organization that offers monthly lectures and programs of quality for anyone interested in spiritual growth and transformation, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, or faith tradition. Founded in July 1999, New Realities also offers a weekly study group of A Course In Miracles on Sunday evenings at 7 p.m. They can be reached at 302-644-3570. Metropolitan Community Church of Rehoboth is a member congregation of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches, a Christian denomination founded in 1968 as a special outreach to the GLBT community and their loved ones. MCC Rehoboth worship services are Sunday at 9 and 11 a.m. at Ocean Wave Lodge. Call 302-645-4945 for more information.
